Figured I might as well kinda move my thread here from the tech column as this is where it probably belongs. Except most of it is me asking stupid questions hence the Tech slot That link for older posts is thegoodvolks.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tech&action=display&thread=1476Anyway we had this big Ol car show in town and I had the motor out anyway and I had the fan shroud off anyway and the paint on it looked awful (all beat up and stained) so I repainted it black and had a pinstriper put Ally's 2276 on it (dont start with the whole 2275 thing I say its a 2276 cuz I like the #76, let it go ) It looks good Ill post pics soon. I redid the back of the alternator red. Im still trying to wrap my head around how to install the rear main seal in with my new seal installer while not removing the pins off of the crank. I think I have a plan and Ill let you'all know how it works out. I have been talking with a man in hederson that builds transaxles and I may delay the engine install a week and install a fresh street comp trans. We are still working on details but hope to nail that down soon. My goal is to have Ally back on the road by the 10th of oct and that seems reasonable. Since the clutch wont slip after Im done here a fresh "built" trans might be a good investment and Im not wanting to do this in the winter. DAn

Dropped the trans off last night. within a week or less should have a nice super street 12 volt trans to install. then its time to hustle and get Ally back on the road for color tour duties.
What do you think of a lake pipe setup off of the back of the mondo muffler? It would look like a small stinger with a cap on it, so when I wanna run loud I can without wasting a gasket.

I really wanna try to have the muffler shop in town weld a lake pipe onto the back of my muffler. It would be cool and different. I think it is a helova great Idea Im surprised no one ever thought of it as an aftermarket performance piece. Then I can run to grand rapids kinda quiet. After I get there uncap and make noise Too much fun. Dan

LOL Would like to hear your Lake Pipe setup sometime. Looks good (wanna paint my shroud?) so far. Are you painting the rest of the tin? Seems to me engine tin is the easiest thing you can do to make your engine look great - certainly most bang for the buck.

I only painted the fan housing someone else did the lettering for 20 bux. I like it As for the rest of the tin Ill paint what needs painting, everything that was yellow needed repainting , Its all good. Lake pipe setup is in the works but is after I finish pretty much everthing else. Took the gas tank out early Sunday morning as I want to install the steering gear Ive been sitting on forever and removed the steering shaft then went to remove the inner tie rod ends and hit a snag. My tie rod end removial tool (picklefork) is too big (yea thats what she said!HAHA) anyway I had to run to sears to pick up a nice lyle set that had everthing I needed (add 40.00 to my vw debt ) as Harbor frieght let me down for the first time. Of course after all the running around I ran outa time to do the job and I had an indoor rc fly I was hosting and when I got home at 11pm I was exhausted. Today I get to work to find Im a one man band as one advisor had a kid over the weekend and has to take care of the other two while his wide recoups and the other one broke his leg when a HUGE tree rolled on top of it (OUCH!!!) anyway I have to work late tonight so I may not get to this thing till tuesday Ah the life. My murican picklefork really forked up the inner tie rod end boots so Im debating what I wanna do on that. Im tempted to just let it fly and replace em later cuz Im kinda way over budget here and the way I drive Ally they may last a couple O years like that (they look pretty new Id say the p.o. installed them a couple O years ago). I know they are cheap and I am there and I hate to do things twice but... Im just not ready to replace em and have to realign yet. I may find some replacement boots yet Ill see. The saga continues Dan

Ok after sleeping on it I remembered I have a 25.00 gift certificate to JCW (god love em) and both inner tie rod ends are like 20.00 for both so I figure with shipping It aught to be a wash. As for the alignment Ill see if I can count threads and all that. If not Ill just have to align it at my work... Again I hate doing things twice, or in the case of the engine 3-4 times Tonights goal is to get the old stuff off and maybe even get the new gear on then Im stuck again till the new tie rod ends get here, and the trans ect ect.. I still am shooting to have everything together and functional by the color tour. Its a long strange trip. Dan

Yea Ill probably take it to the shop in Frankenmuth (IE muffler man) BUT this is not a priority. I just got the steering gear in and that was a roayal PIA!! anyway its done. Waiting on my new inner tie rod ends from JCW that I almost got for free after using an old gift certificate I had laying around. Still waiting on word of my new trans. Hopefully by this weekend the rebuild begins. I am still on track to have it together before the Color tour.

Ok the new inner tie rod ends are on. The steering wheel is just a tad off I may have to take it into work to get it aligned later (I knew that would happen!! GRRRR) anyway its done and no more play in the steering wheel (YEAA!!!) so mission is accomplished. Now I should get my trans back tommorow and then the real Thrash fest begins. Cant wait for it to be on the road again.
