I've been using 30wt Brad Penn,, on bone stock motors I use one qt of Brad Penn and top it off with what the costumer likes as in good oil,Quaker State ect. and the valve adjustments stay put,so I know it's not hurting the cam&lifters

After I stemmed most of the leaks I changed to 5w40 mobil 1 full synthetic diesel oil and temps went down 10 degrees. Go figure. I hear its the same with the brad pen synthetic stuff.

I was at Walmart and found two oils with zddp. Both were high milage oils. Don't recall the brand but said they were for older cars.

Gonna drag up an old thread here......does anyone know if the QS 30wt four stroke has ZDDP in it? It does not have the "energy conserving" logo on it and that usually means it has it. Thats what Im running with a bottle of STP additive but I think I might be running to much ZDDP in it. Any idea?

Are you sure the STP has zinc in it? I have heard conflicting info on that.
Funny you bring this up today. I just switched my race car from Brad Penn to VR1 20-50. It is not synthetic and it had zinc. We will see how it goes. ;

Yes it says right on the bottle contains zzdp additive. Im just not sure about the QS four stroke. I think it already has it in it due to being labeled four stoke and not regular oil

Jerry, 4stroke, as in motorcycle oil?
Interesting thing about that... I was looking through a manual for ACVW's from the 70's, and the oil specified was API SE. Most motorcycle oils I have seen are API SF, SG or SJ, all of which are obsolete oil ratings for automobile use from back in the day.
The thing that concerns me is that the motorcycle oils are formulated for wet clutch systems...aka, not nearly as much emphasis on minimizing friction, like modern oils. Not a lot of Moly in oils for wet clutches. That may not actually be a big deal. I'm sure the friction modifier formulations in oils from the 70's were quite primitive to modern automobile oil standards.
Would I use it, not unless I look into it more. That being said, some of those 10w40 conventional oils and some synthetics can be had just about anywhere for about 5 bucks. Valvoline 4T synthetic is listed at 1120ppm ZDDP on their website. Haven't found a definitive number on the conventional oil though. Probably about the same.

Just found valvolines specs on their conventional 10w40 motorcycle oil. It is listed on their website as 0.112/0.103 zinc/phosphorous by % weight, not in PPM, but should be pretty close to 1100/1000 ppm zinc/phosphorous if I had to estimate.
Very interesting Jerry. Who would have guessed?

If you have a lot of spring pressure in them heads? use Brad Penn.or Gibbs. Go price Carillo Rods and a Scat crank!!!I had ether Valvoline or Kendall Racing Oil in my NEW 0 mile 1915 and the lifters&cam took a crap in 5 miles If the oil has an 'SM" rating it doesn't have any ZDDP in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Funny, all this talk about ZDDP and PPM, this has it, this has more, this has none. 1000ppm, 1500ppm. Add more, don't add more. We all agree that an engine with oil in it is better than an engine without oil, right? We all agree that if said oil has ZDDP in it, it is better, right? But, here is the million dollar question..........………… What is the proper and recommended (by one with metallurgy experience) PPM of ZDDP? Hey Mike, do you break-in with both springs in place when running duals?

I have often wondered what the "magic number" for the zzdp actually is. Ive been told that too much is just as bad as not enough. I still haven't made up my mind what to run in the new motor

That's the $64,000 Question How much is enuff? Well Brad Penn must have the right amount from what I see when disassemble my engines Patrick, I do the break in with duals springs,no issues with good oil ,,even at $8qt worth it,and I run 4qt sumps
