I am still playing with it. I got new main and idle jets in it but havent had time to tune it yet. Still havent found the correct air jet for it though. Ill be putting new plugs in it tonight and trying to tune it in after that. There is an odd idle jet issue that im still trying to figure out. It actually seems to run quite well but its running rich. Ill be out working on it tonight.

Well, I am not having very good luck with this. I have a few more things to try but I am on the hunt for a GOOD carb set up for it. I called the guys at appletree and they told me to run a empi 40 hpmx! Thats what I had in it to start with and it wouldnt run. But I think that was just a bad lemon carb. Who knows? So this weekend I will try some last ditch efforts on it and see what happens. Patrick might let me try a set up that he has just to see what it does.

good luck, I've had my fair share of carb problems, but one important thing to remember is it's a VW and they never run perfect all the time. It's just nice when you step on the gas and it does what you expect it to when you expect it to.
carb opinions are like not a very nice persons.(edit: lol I didn't type 'not a very nice persons', more like a$$h_les)

Im finding that out! I am getting a lot of diffrent info from different people. I will get it to run right at some point. The motor itself is fantastic! I love the way it runs when the carb is working right. I am getting a set of headers that have the fittings for the manifold pre heat hopefully today. I will probably end up running those with a new 34 carb on it. I like how simple they are and It seems to run ok with that on. I am not after all out power with this rig because I mostly just drive around town with it. Sometimes I hit the trails and get a little dirty but big power is not my overall goal so the stock 34 will be fine for what I use it for. I will probably get a diffrent air filter set up so it "looks" like it has a cooler set up on it! Little fooling never hurt no one!

My experience is that the stock carbs are the best carbs for stock(ish) engines. The only time I have seen carb troubles is when the stock one is seriously neglected, or remove and something else dropped in something else, like a ridiculous progressive. Same goes for the ignition system in my book. Others may argue with me, and that is fine, but this has just been my experience.

That is my thinking as well. The motor is not really built very much so I think a stock style carb will be fine.

Well the boat went into storage today and that means the rail gets to go in the garage! Time to start the rebuild of, well, everything other than the motor. Hopefully I can find some parts at the bug run to add to my pile o parts in the corner.

Those pile-o-parts just seem to grow and grow, don't they?
