1679, Single empi 40 hmpx, 008 dizzy. I am going to look for air leaks tonight at the carb, manifold etc. Them I am going to check points, condenser and timing. One i have that squared away I will move onto the carb tuning. I think my other motor might have a 009 dizzy in it. Any advantage to running the 008 or the 009? I have never tuned or timed one of these motors but I am very comfortable with quad and motorcycle engines. Patrick gave me some good tips to get started but any advice you could offer would be great!

youtu.be/k4qHBxDIv_I. Update, and another video. This was after taking it for a 10 mile drive. Engine oil temp never gets above 170-180. I looked for leaks at any air intake points and found none. Adjusted the points to .016 and changed the cap and rotor to the one from the other engine cause they looked a lot better inside. Seems to run better just driving around town. Still stumbles a bit when getting on it in first and while cruising in 4th. The 4th stumble is better. Pops 2-4 times and then runs good. Is this the ever present 009 stumble? (I think it has the 009 not 008 im a bit dumb). Looked at the head temps with a lazer gun, 1 and 3 were cooler than 2 and 4. Thought maybe not getting spark? Started it and pulled 1 and 2 plug wires off individualy and no change in idle but dud run worse when revved. Pulled 2 and 4 off and it died almost instantly. Bad plug wires? Also the video.....seems to tick like crazy. Do I need to adjust the valves or is this normal? Oh one more thing, I should of bought this thing before I got married! Every place I go the ladys love it!

I'm on Dial-up so can't see vid ???Single IDF style carbs can be a PITA to dial in. Does it have a vacume port? if so try a 034 dizzy or 205 If u have the purdy colored plug wires they are the reason it's missing too,Try adjusting the acc.pump on the carb for that stumble? but it's probable the dizzy

It does not have a vacume port. I am going to try switching the plug wires from my other motor onto this one and see what that does. I looked at the points and they look ok. Im thinking maybe plug wires and condensor? Is there a way to test the condensor? Ill be at my cabin for a long weekend so I probably wont be working on it till next week but when I get back ill swap the wires and see what that does. Seems to me that the 1 and 2 cylinders are not really doing anything until they are under load.

1432 try turning the volume control screw out a little. The PICT-34 can be a little grumpy. Check the DWELL also.

I've heard single IDF style carbs are tougher to tune then dual IDF's, I had(along with 1/2 the club) a heck of a time getting Ruffuss drivable. Not perfect yet but he is on the road and running. Still pops at or just above an idle. As long as I keep my Foot in it he runs fine...good thing that's way I drive, most of the time!!

It actually runs good just driving around town. After the stumble in first when I get on it she runs well too. I just want to make sure Ive got it running as well as possible. Maybe this is just the way the thing runs and thats how it is. If thats the case cool, ill drive it how it is and be very happy about it. Im just not fermiliar enough with VW stuff to know whats right and whats wrong I think i might be reading to much into how its running and I jujst need to take it out and drive it.

Yeah, tried my phone to type on here... IT's a smart phone and I'm NOT. Anyway if you think the engine is the problem to why it runs poorly pull it and I will give you your money back... No problems. I will be in IL for the 4th and after the 4th of July I will have my T-3 back from a friends house, forgot the specs but I will say stock, dual port dual relief case dual carbs...If you want to keep riding we can work a deal on the T-3 engine (CHEAP). Want a happy customer/member/friend, now don't go getting all mushy mushy on me you guys Dealin Dave is in the HOUSE:)

I dont think its the motor dave. I think its my lack of tuning ability! I hold NOTHING against you for anything. I am very happy with the motor and I dont want you or anyone on here to think that I am blaming you for these issues. Please dont think that! I am currently leaning toward plug wires and plugs. Im very confident that it will run tip top after I get it tuned. No worries dave, im good!

All good just making sure we both are happy:) Plugs were used 1 season and the wires?? OLD! THROW THEM OUT, no save them just in case put them in the tool kit on the buggy, an old wire is better that no wire at all:)

Sweet mother! This thing pulls hard when you can actually give her some skinny pedal! Im getting super close to having it running tip top. Adjusted the valves, not really that off but did it anyway. Found the wire to the coil from the ignition was bad. Dont ask how lets just say I screwed up. Replaced that wire and she runs sooooo much better! It actually sits at a nice idle instead of roughly 1100! Wooohoooo!!!!!
