Aarons 62 sunroof

Well I dont know where to start other than Aaron is a cousin that has enjoyed my exploits with my vw's over the years. He is a major motor head himself and builds cars and repairs bodywork on the side. So when he called me and said he found a sweet 62 rag I was not very surprised but happy that he found a cool bug. He asked if I could look at it and help him get it home. He purchased it for a song and I think he he is well on the way to an awsome ride. The way I understand it is that he wants to keep it pretty stock with the 1200 motor. It has a 66 declid on it but other than that the body itself is pretty good with the major problem being the floors and the heater channels. Being the metal worker he is this should not be much of a problem. He is going to weld some bracing and then lift the body off and cut out the old to make way for the new.

I allready have asked Aaron to sigh up so he can update this thread. I took the pics so I thought Id start it for him.

Ok Dan Im here! Planning on bringing the 62 into the garage tonight or tomorrow. Just putting a remote start on the daily driver as it wont be in the garage for a while.

Thanks for the welcome! Yeah, when I saw this ragtop back on CL I knew I had to be quick - got a hold of the owner on New Years Eve. It was up for sale on CL earlier this summer but the ad was pulled before I got hold of him and I was surprised to see it back on there.

My buddy in college had/still has a '62 rag top. Lots of good memories. I hope you get it back on the road soon.

Well, I got it in the garage last night. I pulled the back seat out and all the glass except the door glass. I was curious to see if I had any metal left in those areas. Not as bad as I was expecting on the areas where the glass goes. The heater channels - which I am used to calling rocker panels - are pretty much non existant. This is my first time owning a VW and it is quite different than what I am used to working on. Planning to pull the engine this eve after work.

Before pulling the engine you might want to focus stripping the rest of the body panels (doors, fenders, hood, engine cover, bumpers) Dont worry about the door glass we can take that out later. Before pulling the motor call me or watch it done on YouTube a few times. Its not hard but hey it never hurts to watch someone do it first.
Of course you still need to weld in the braces and then you can start the fun stuff. Have you checked out
