Nothing really new to add to this, with the exception that the engine and tins are in the basement "shop" awaiting me to do something with it. Not sure how much tinwork I will be able to reuse just yet, and I will be replacing the clutch as well as trying to attempt to re-gasket the entire engine. Still have the wiring to make a decision about: build my own harness or purchase new. The thought of building my own is tempting, but at the same time a "remove and replace" option is appealing as well lol.

Remember...Hylomar is your friend.
Hylomar is your friend.
Best thing out there for the many, many gaskets and that are all over a VW. It's expensive at about $10 per tube, but it never dries, and never leaks. Just follow directions.

Dropped the engine off at Patrick's yesterday (1/21/12) to have him give it a once over. She ran really well with no weird noises or anything, but figured best to be safe then sorry with someone that knows these engines better than me Just got to find some engine tins, heat axchangers and order a clutch & throw out bearing and that part of the project should be good to go

Just ordered a bunch of parts from cip1 (2/9/12)....mostly engine stuff I needed, but did get the front disk brake conversion kit, all new replacement steel line kit and the braided steel lines to replace the rubber ones. Also ordered everything to completely rebuild the rear drums. And of course, right after ordering yestrday, the weather turns nasty today....sigh....well, next time it's nice out i'll have parts

If you want to wait; you could go to the Buggy Show and buy the breast plate from one of the members or another vendor.

Afternoon Ray - Yeah, I'm going to toss up another post here in GV, and search a bit on Samba and see what I can find. I may not make the BBS, but hoping if Pat goes he'll keep an eye out for it. I need to find out when the BBS is and where....would be nice to go myself

Going to use this as a "live & learn" experience: even though you have ALL openings covered, when pressure washing, water can and WILL find it's way into things somehow So much for having this thing buttoned up and ready to go back in soon.... BUT, will be ordering new 85.5 P&C's beginning of the week, getting the heads taken care of (thanx Pat!!) and hopefully won't put too much of a delay on things.

Front disc conversion w/ braided lines -DONE Rebuild rear brakes w/ all new parts and braided lines - half done
Fronts were easy, just unbolt, toss old stuff (in a box of course) and replace with all new stuff. Rear's on the other hand....all crusty & rusty, had to PB Blaster the adjusters just to get them to move
Hopin the passenger rear goes a little easier, but not going to hold my breath lol

I've heard that installing disk brakes moves the front wheels out some. Did you happen to notice how much wider your wheels are with respect to the fenders?

How long ago did you pressure wash that engine?? It looks like the water was in there for a while!. If patrick is on the engine all will be fine... Arm rests will be at his house today. Thanks Dave T

Brian - I didn't notice the wheels being pushed out at all, so if it did it was very slight. Dave - I pressure washed it last fall to get all the mouse nest particles from out of the fins, and somehow got water in it. Everything was covered really well so I'm at a loss at how it got in there. And yes, Pat has the engine. Awaiting P&C's from Texas now
