I'll be doing my first oil change in the next couple weeks and and looking for feedback on what to run for oil. It's a stock 1600 street car. I know some guys are running just SAE 30 (and have for a long time) and I've also heard (after the Bug Run) that the cam will go out without additives (ZDDP.) So what should I (or what do you) use?

Oh no! Not again. thegoodvolks.proboards.com/thread/2722/zddpUnfortunately some of the stuff that was true back then, probably isn't now. I still use Joe Gibbs oil in the 72 that I really care about and will be sending oil in from it for oil analysis. My stock engine drag bug has been surviving just fine on garden variety 10W30 with Lucas 10063 additive. My VZ-30 cammed race motor with dual springs had both intake lobes go flat with Valvoline VR-1. I have come to the conclusion that Brad Penn is the best alternative for most motors. I will be using it in most of my motors except the 72 that will stay with the Gibbs oil. I'd hoped to find a better alternative, but have caved in. Most of the "tech data" that oil brands offer seem more like advertising propaganda to me. Makes it hard to decide.

My dad has run Cakerstate 10W30 in his bug since he bought it in 1969. First engine lasted 200,000 miles. Second engine still going on 60,000 miles. I run Castrol SAE 30. Your results may vary. Void where prohibited. May cause oily discharge and dry mouth. Pregnant women and those who may become pregnant should not handle. If oil pressure remains high for over 4 hours, see your nurse.

They have Brad Penn at the auto parts store here in Bugtussle (Perry).
I use Brad Penn 30 weight in the Pig of Plastic.
No issues at all.

I've never heard of Brad Penn oil - is that the actual name of the oil?
Nevermind....I Googled it, then checked for local supplier and found none here in Battle Creek.

Yes it is. This used to be Kendall GT, which was fabulous racing oil.
Kendall was purchased, and switched formulations.
The oil is named from the BRADford refinery in PENNslyvania. This is the oldest refinery in the US. It is well worth the money, and it is under $6.00 a quart. If you have problems getting it, feel free to drop me a PM and I'll be happy to send you some for the cost of the oil and shipping via USPS priority flat rate mail.

NAPA Battle Creek carries it. I have it in the bus and sandrail. Used to have it in the race car but switched to VR1. Maybe a bad decision? Beats me.

Yup, just seemed to leak too much. Thought it was due to the BP being partial synthetic, vr1 is non-synthetic. VR1 is supposed to have zddp in it. Right?

Not enough zink in Vr-1
X2
BUT, the datasheet says it has it. There must be more to the story than the amount of the chemicals that they talk about
Still confused on all of this. It seems people using Brad Penn don't report failures on existing engines that are running fine. I haven't found any reports of any failures using Joe Gibbs oil in any VW sites.

I haven't looked into this lately but, I was under the impression that VR1 racing for off road use only still had a good zink content in it. PS. If you ask me, just make sure your engine has oil in it. "That's the most important thing" LOL
