I'm putting a bus shifter in my car and need idea's for a shift knob. My car isn't really a rat rod, but I like the look of a tall shifter. I'm looking for something clean but not your regular knob. I was going to put on a set of brass knuckles, but after thinking about I don't really like that idea, it looks alright on some cars, but not mine. Any idea's would be appreciated, the shifter will be raw metal, not painted.

The skull is what I'm leaning toward right now. I want something non-traditional, something you don't see very often. Thanks guys, keep the ideas coming.

How about a matchbox car, painted to simulate your bug?

I have a cool idea what about using an old VW piston and welding a threaded rod coupler to the bottom of it with the same thread as the shifter. It would be large and obnoxious but cool.

I like the piston idea with a twist of the piston brazed to the rod and the rod brazed at an angle to suit your taste and it could be tapped the correct size of the shifter thread through the rod cap. Although the billard ball that AJ makes are "Tits". You see the skull everywhere on rat rods along with the all mighty "bird" finger, X bone, Maltixcross, beer taps and such. Later Kenn

Just the piston rod sounds pretty cool. Does anyone have an old one laying around they want to get rid of? AJ would you be able to drill and tap one? I believe its 10X1.5mm.

Hi Jerry,
I have a rod you can have Jerry, but that is a lot of weight up there. I also have an old 2 1/2 hp lawn mower motor that probably has an aluminum rod in it. Let me know if you want either one of them.

If you could find someone to drill and tap the wrist pin, you could attach it with the stock clips, the piston would then pivot as if it were on the rod, without as much weight. Might make it tough to shift though. You could probably find a smaller piston, maybe from a mower engine like Rudy's, or, if you want to keep it VW, I have a used set of 77's over here. What else are you into (besides VW's) that you could bring into your car to personalize? I was going to do up a hammer head shift knob for Cori's dad, he's a builder.

I have some VW pistons and rods collecting dust here. Yes I can drill and tap just as long its not super hard material. My Tap and Die sets are not super high dollar but they work.

I was worried about the weight. I have a few months before I need it, so I have some time to think about it.

Jerry, I weighed a 77mm piston (40hp) and it was 14.4 oz. or about 407g, so just under a pound. That's including rings and the wrist pin.
AJ, I believe the wrist pins are quite hard, or I would give it a shot with my tap and die set. I could try heating the pin and aneal it a little before drilling and tapping, the hardness won't make a difference for a shifter anyhow. An old hand grenade is always a cool shift knob also (my .02)
