My one score from the big swap meet in Kazoo last weekend: Kinda handy having a paint reference chart, and since I know we're going to be starting work on another 74 Beetle over the summer the codes will come in handy. Yeah, I know... they're all over the internet. I like having it in my hands and having it not be an approximation based on whatever my inkjet printer felt like printing. Fenders on (although they're get loosened up for the welting again at some point. Wiring up the headlights, tail lights, markers, etc. now. About ready to order a headliner (oh joy!) and a few missing sunroof bits.

Can't tell you how handy it is to have color samples for your car!
It was a serious pain to get the correct code to paint the Fiat...I had a number from the firewall, but the number listed by the paint company said it was for a 1981 Fiat X-19, not a 1972 Fiat 124 Coupe...
I could not find anything on a color name on the internet, so I ended up having to have a pint of the color mixed to check everything. It turned out that the color was correct, but it cost $50 to have a pint mixed so I could check it.
Still, the paint was almost $900 for a gallon, so it was worth it.
Just expensive...
If only I had had a book...the paint store only went back until 1980.

We painted my Dad's '69 with '74 Harvest Gold Metallic back in the 80's and then again 2 years ago. Nice. I'm not the biggest fan of gold colors, although this one is OK. (Just ask me how many Harvest Gold MGBs I've had the "pleasure" of working on over the past several years). I'm keeping it like this because I love the patina that's developed over the years. All the peeling paint, especially on the trunk lid, is awesome. I may get a pint of the color mixed up to re-do the sunroof which was in a horrid light gray primer when I got the car. Right now it's rattle can gold that's been brillo-pad sanded down so it kinda matches the roof. Other parts of the car have been pseudo-matched with a kind of nutmeg brown basecoat with a dust of the rattle can gold over top.

Dad bought the '69 new with tan paint. When I was a kid, there was someone in our neighborhood with a gold Sun Bug. It seemed like a nice color at the time, and by the mid '80s Dad's bug was more primer than paint so we picked gold. Painted it in our driveway. When he repainted a couple of years ago, I tried to talk him into going back to the original '69 tan. He said he's been driving a gold Beetle for 30 years, no one would recognize him in another color. Attachments:

That's the reason I chose to make new ones. Old ones are all 40+ years old, stressed from vibration, and often coroded pretty badly by now. I will save the 40 IDFs for when this gets tired out. Then I will take the cylinders to an engine machine shop to have them punched out to 96mm, get a slightly hotter cam, arp rod bolts, and make a nice rev happy engine with good power across the board.

I'm hoping to make it there this year. I have always wanted to go but never was around. I'll be looking for cheap scores like headlights, etc. maybe an 094 transmission if I find one for a good price.

Today (I hope) will see the insulating roof pads get installed in preparation for the headliner, a cigarette lighter installed under the dash and some measurements taken for my eventual stereo install. I do like my stereos loud and proud, so in all likelihood there will be a subwoofer installed somewhere.

Fitted and dropped off intake 2.0 then established oil pressure on the new 2332cc engine. Now I'm waiting for the welder to do his thing.
