Im still deciding something, and I would like your guys' opinion. In the spring time, I am thinking about parting with the '68. There are a few things such as the door panels and carpet that I am thinking about replacing. Reason for this being that I really wanna get a good start on a Germanlook, and I cannot have both. What are you opinions on this guys. I am still looking into staying in the VW hobby, just looking to make an improvement to a Germanlook. Plus I would like to make sure that I can build the next one from the ground up, and do as much of the work as I can myself. Again give me some input, maybe I am missing some possible ways to get around selling. And for those of you that have seen my car, how much do you think its worth???

Chris I really don't remember your car too well, but if its not your thing anymore somebody else will use it. The emotional tie between a person and there vehicle is pretty tough to break, and if the only way for you to get something interested in is to sell it then so beit. How much would replacing door panels a carpet increase the value? Would the increase in resale value offset the cost of material? Guys sell and trade up everyday, I know I have plenty of times. Good luck with the decision, let us know how it goes.

The only reason for putting a few bucks into the door cards, and the carpet is that the car is tan, the seat are brown, the door cards are black, and the carpet is a salt and pepper. I figure that the door panels will likely get recovered, and the carpet will just help it sell. I woudnt sell if I werent going for the Germanlook

Chris I met you once during the club picnic and I too have never seen your car. I remember that you were looking for a frame and that you found one. Don't you need a body too to complete your German Look, Will th 68 work for the German Look? If so it is easier to keep something then trying to find one again.

I would love to keep it. But right now I can not afford to keep one and build another. I am planning on the Germanlook being a two summer project. I will be tossing around the idea of keeping it, but ideally I am trying to get two things done at one time, being I want an older car, and I want a killer Germanlooker.

Chris, I think you need to ask yourself a bunch of questions. Is the look what you really want? Can I do it? With the 68' ? As a base for the new want? What is the 68' worth to you How much do you have into it? can you get that out of it? Complete? Part? or as a package? Is the look worth offing the 68'? Are you looking to make a profit? Or lose your as-butt? some where inbetween? Is the reason because of the 68'? not being what you thought it should be? Want it to be? There are probaly more but you get the idea. I've always liked the 68' and the direction that it started out, questioned some choices, but always liked the car. And would hate to see you make the wrong choice and not be able to reverse it. Later Kenn.

well you can make certain that I wont lose my butt on it, I guess I just want to build a germanlook from the ground up, It would be a shame to tear that one down and build it into the germanlook that I want. It was everything I hoped/wanted it to be, I just am ready for something different I guess.

Chris: I love driving my cars. I would not be excited about selling my only VW and not having one to drive. I really enjoy the club and the activities. Not having a car and being able to drive it to events would not make me happy. So, if it were me I would get the '68 driveable and enjoy it. Then I would slowly work on the German looker without spending lots on it all at once. I was interested in doing a Germal Look car. Then when we saw that one at Funfest last year I changed my mind. To do one right will take lots of money. Just pick up stuff as you go and work on it little by little. Then if it takes years you still have a car to enjoy. -Bren

Thanks bren, I totally agree with you. I am looking into getting the VW as perfect as I can get it, meaning carpet, door panels, and most importantly the motor. Then I think I might be swayed to keep it. Maybe I can use the '68 for the looker, and just build up the chassis, and then swap the bodies. Also maybe to achieve the older look, I will get a ragtop installed and put older fenders on it ;D

I once had a 64 sunroof that was mega solid. I kept it pretty much original except for a single quiet exhaust. Everything else was stock right to the whitewall tires. After 8 years I decided I wanted something I would not feel bad about cutting up and making a fast cal look out of. I sold the 64 for a pretty good profit and bought a 71 with a blown motor. Spent a lot of time and money on the 71 and Ill tell you what. I missed/still miss the 64. My current 66 sunroof is as close as I could find to the 64 I had (with my budget that is!). Keep your 68, turn it into whatever you want and hey if you want to go back later, redo it! Bugs are very easy to restore even after modding. Just go for it knowing that as your interests change your good buddy bug is willing to go with you on the ride. Whatever you want a bug can do it, off road, race, vintage, kit car, its game. KEEP EVERYTHING YOU TAKE OFF!!!!!!!!!!! It all comes in handy later (I have a hard time keeping my own advice by the by).

well I am hoping to have the door panels done this winter, but a few things to help with in the spring if anybody wants are the rear axle seals, and making sure the motor is squared away. I am 99.9% sure that the motor is sound, seeing that it hasnt had a problem lately, but I need to make sure that the rear apron and the breast tin fit the best they can. Even if I did swap the body onto a build chassis, there would be some small downtime in the spring or fall, because I want to rewire it at that point. Im glad to have your guys' input, because you keep me inline with the stuff that my heart really wants. Another thing is, dansam you raise a great point. From what I was told I am driving a car that lived most of its life in cali. No rot whatsoever except the battery try(that has been fixed). THanks again. Like I said hopefully I have sometime this year.
