I've seen loose axle nuts on stock VW drums, also seen what it can do to the splines when the drum "wobbles" for a few miles. I use my torque-meister on ALL gland nuts and axle nuts that I touch, 35 ft/lbs at the wrench = 315 at the nut! I do 42 ft/lbs on chromoly gland nuts, thats 378 at the nut!! Disks are a little bit overkill for stopping a rail, but, they don't fade, they don't get sand and mud in them that affects your ability to stop, they don't need adjusting, and, they are easier to maintain (pad changes).

I have heard of some inferior quality Chinese and Brazilian drums out there on the market. I wonder if that was part of the problem...poor quality cast iron. From what I gather, German and Italian drums are the ones to get. I am told the quality of the cast iron is superior to the others.
I think I may have to get me one of those contraptions for the axle and gland nuts. Way cheeper than a bigger torque wrench. They sound magical.

Just disc on the back and no fronts stop good on light buggys, madmike Some day I might see if I can get this contraption titled in Michigan, so would be in my best intreats to run brakes on all four corners? My original plan was to swap the wheel cylinders front to back thus setting the braking bias to back. I have heard good things about using the 17mm wheel cylinders up front, and the 22mm ones in the back. It seams to work well for most light buggies.

Yup, mine has rear disc only. It is street legal the right way; assembled roadster title.

I'm surprised you guys got away with rear brakes only. How did you manage that?
What would happen if say you got in a crash, and your insurance company found out you were only running rear brakes?

Put 4 brakes on and run a bias knob or shut off valve to the front. In my experience not enough weight up front to run brakes. They will just lock up and you will not be able to steer. Even my Baja Bug locks up the front wheels first.

If I ever get back to putting Baja back together I am going disk.
