Does this VW yard have bugs and type 3s as well? Good luck on the bus, AJ.

It has alot of cars, type 1, 2, 3s nothing great. More for trinkets and small parts. John has come over to it alot he might be better to ask. I have his number and he runs a bug store next to the junk yard.
AJ I think somebody in our area was selling a complete camping interior on Craigslist for 400, should be able to find it if you search through the michigan sections.

Thanks for all of your input this is my plan fix it and drive it purchase the front floor area and have someone weld it in and may be other pieces. After the engine I will move onto electrical, brakes then the sliding door. I see a road trip to Millington many times in my future this spring.

Removing a Bus engine is simple stupid easy. No need to jack up the Bus at all. We did just once to make it easier for me to crawl under. We did not fire it up but it did putt a few times. The test mount was not quite up to par. So I borrowed John H. Fathers test mount and will try again tomorrow. Thanks to Bren and Kenn for stopping by to help lend a hand. It made things so much easier.
I know a welder too is it the same guy?

What do you mean when you say test mount? Is it an engine run stand, to run the engine out of the car or something else?

Sorry for the confusion but its not really a stand. Its just the bell housing of a transmission with the starter installed mounted to the engine sitting on the ground. I did not know what to call it. Simply put I have not made or purchased a engine test stand I was just getting by with what I had. It is very hard to adjust any thing on the engine mounted in the Bus. So I thought that I could adjust everything with the motor out. Then install a almost perfect running engine. Sorry I will get pictures later. Bren just forgot his camera.

Yep removing the Bus motors is nice and easy. Just unbolt the apron and side it out that was nice when doing it on Dan's old Bus.

Today I set forth to fire up the engine again. This time I was more prepared after hooking every thing up. I adjusted the timing poured a little gas down the carb it fired up ran for a bit. Then died I did the same thing again it ran than died. I tried it again and BOOM the muffler just exploded spewing hot carbon and rusty metal all over the place. Lucky for the Bus my face took most of the blast. I am ok but my face still stings a little. What would cause such an explosion? After a breather I figured out that the fuel pump was not working so I just gave up. I started dissembling the engine. I plan on rebuilding the carb replacing the fuel pump and replacing the rusty tin. Since I have most of the engine apart I want to pull the heads and inspect the cylinders. I am kind of bummed because I wanted to install the motor and drive the Bus out of the garage and do a victory lap around my apartment complex this weekend. Oh-well soon but I will be better off after a full engine inspection. Here is a picture of how I left the garage today.

Man that is frighetning AJ. I hope you really are OK. Wonder if raw fuel got down into the exhaust and got hot and exploded? Just a guess.

WOW! Glad you are ok AJ,
I would guess the exhaust had a major restriction in it causing the stalls then finally it could not take it anymore and exploded. Not sure but its a guess. If you end up getting new pistons and cylinders I would go with the easy upgrade of 87's and another tri mill euro 2 tip. When we put that exhaust on Dan's Bus it made a noticeable difference and the 87's would help a little more. Also the .125 main jet as these Buses need all the help they can get power wise.

This may sound weird but if I do need to install pistons and cylinders I want to go stock 85.5mm. I currently have an engine waiting for my stroker crank with 90.5mm pistons. I just want a driver I even plan on running the stock exhaust with heat exchangers. I am kind of afraid to pull the heads because if the pistons are waisted I should also split the case and buy rod and main bearings. Then my low budget test drive a bus plan is ruined. I can always add more power later.
