I got my case back from Paul Boss, yesterday, who did the case savers. Nice guy who does a great job, located in mid-michigan. Mr Barnum recomended him and I was not disappointed. Engine assembly starts tonight

More progress.... Got the Genny done a bit ago... Put the crank together today with the rebuilt rods... 4th time putting it back together and this time its good! Drilled out some holes on the heads after bumping into some info on the Samba that makes them run cooler... supposedly anyway! I'm waiting on a drill bit to tap the case for an oil temp gauge... hopefully back together soon... I want to get this thing to a show!

Looking good. I'd not heard of drilling holes in the head

I could see drilling holes to increase surface area for cooling, but I would think that you would have to drill a number of small holes to increase cooling measurably.
Sounds like an old wives tale to me.

I ran across it published as a factory mod for pre-65 heads... Does it work? Beats me but I had the time so I figured why not!

Before long she will be ready for the road! Cant wait to see it. Me too! I've just been working on the engine and sneaking a peek under the tarp at the actual bug now and then but have yet to see the whole thing uncovered I got the cylinder studs in the block today and set the crank at .003, in only 3 tries. I'm glad i saved the shims from the junk engine or I would have been SOL.... and thank goodness for the torque dude tool!

Its in Mostly smooth install except for the exhaust... Turns out they sent me the wrong muffler install kit but I went ahead and stuck the engine anyway!
