Well met a guy who had some rail parts for sale on craigslist and found out he's my my girlfriends cousin so I was talking to him and he gave me a trade offer I couldn't refuse; He wanted the used clutch slave cylinder I had (it was an extra part i got, my rail has a cable clutch) and in trade hooked me up with 2 4-point harnesses, extra brake shoes and brake cylinder, a foot rest bracket for the passenger side, and a new set of exhaust. I felt bad for accepting everything but he wasn't letting me walk away without it, some times I love my girlfriends family more than my own:) He also has a center council that he said will be mine if he build the dash he wants to, so now I have to find a way to help him out since I cannot stand to accept everything he's giving me and not be able to return the favor. Here's his post if theres anything anyone needs from him. nmi.craigslist.org/rvs/2330314482.html

Took the rail to D&R Buggys in rose city today and finally got the entire scoop on my rail, It is a stock motor with 88mm piston/jugs, not a stroker. While there I purchased a set of jugs/pistons, piston rings, washer/nuts for the entire block. They also went over the entire rail showed me stuff to work on and to fix up, focusing on spots in the front end to strengthen up since it appears the previous owners may have snapped or bent parts in the front end from dropping the nose down to hard coming over hills and such, in the short time I was there I learned quite a bit and was very happy dealing with them.

EEK! I'M WORRIED! I decided to bail on my original idea of trying to just leave the motor on the rail. so I pulled it and im worried about what I found. Check the 2 pictures of the trans and I'm sure you can see what I'm worried about. Please leave input, The flywheel doesn't appear to be chewed up so I don't know if it was an old problem and they replaced the flywheel or what. s288.photobucket.com/albums/ll180/rbelchak/Sand%20Rail/

Looks like an early six volt transmission that someone enlarged the bell housing to run a 12 volt flywheel and starter. Kind of standard operating procedure but they could have done a better job.

O ok that makes me feel better I figured the previous owner left something loose and the flywheel ate all that metal away.
And I would have just posted the pictures up like I usually do but was worried I was eating up too much space on the forum.

Well I took some time today to work on getting the motor ready for reassembly but had to stop since I ran out of brake cleaner. Got most of the mud and crud off the block, cleaned up where the jugs seat on the motor sprayed around in the motor to hopefully send any dirt and gunk to the oil pan and then removed the oil pan. Gotta wait for more $ to continue cleaning up the motor. There is quite a bit of rust on/in/around the flywheel, hope it doesn't need to be replaced right away but expect to have to. I was told what I have on the buggy is a 12v generator, if so as long as the pulley still rotates would replacing the brushes solve any issues for the time being, unknown to me it was left outside in the rain so I'm hoping it isn't toast. Also I seem to have misplaced a head so I have to head back to my girlfriends grandmas and hope I left it setting out there.
EDIT! I contacted the kid I got the rail from and he tells me he found more parts in the garage so I stop by and he had the other half of my 4 to 1 exhaust so I can give my buddy back the dual exhaust he gave me and the kid also had the other head I couldn't find. So I am back on track WOO WOO!

Well got a bit of progress done today, Sadly once it was slapped together we realized the wind deflector didn't get put in so, when it will run I want to get a quick run out of it and then tear down and put in the deflector plates in (I also have to purchase a deflector since I am missing one. Got plenty more work ahead and more parts to buy but all in all it's starting to look up. Stuff I know we got ahead of us is to purchase; Battery, alternator, wind deflector, brake master cylinder, (possibly distributor and starter). Also need to put fittings on the valve covers for breather lines, and obviously finish putting it together and all the normal stuff once its sealed up. Big thanks to D&R Buggys, mad mike and everyone else who helped in getting everything together. I'll post more pictures as we get more done.

Hey Robert,I wouldn't bother with the vents on the valve covers It's basicly a stock motor so it won't rev to 6k ;D thus no need to vent them, just a hose from the filler vent to the air cleaner is all that's needed,Madmike

My buddy already gave me a bug pack breather or whatever you call it so I'll hold off for now on venting the heads but I will run them sooner than later.

Well we spent some time in the garage today and well I think now is when I most likely need the help of a "professional".

Finishing assembly, odds and ends like where do these long return springs go that used to be hooked up to the carbs or something, double check and make sure I didn't miss anything, ( I know we didn't get the wind deflectors put in, will be first priority after a quick break in session if we ever get it running), also still need to find an alternator or get some brushes and see if this generator works, and once its together need help getting it tuned in or whatever make sure the carbs are matched up and to make sure I get the shroud bolted up correctly and whatever else might need done lol. If you can't tell from the picture all the work is being done on an old wooden spool like what the electric company has their wiring rolled up on it's been a little tough. I've never rebuilt a motor or anything before so this was a BIG leap of faith that I hoped I could get it this far and get it done correctly. Shopping list: Alternator, Battery, brake master cylinder, motor oil, spark plugs, oil filter, gauges, thats what I know for sure but I bet there is stuff I don't remember. For sale list: type 4 motor, and 5 split blocks that look just like mine, (except nothing in the other 5) I'll try to get some pictures up soon I came across the body of what looks like the body for a 1 seater buggy or something, My gfs grandpa used to mess with buggys alot so theres some cool stuff setting around the property, a bunch of old school fiberglass hoods for who knows what one im pretty sure is for a bug. I'll start a new thread when I get pictures of all the new stuff I found. The mysterious body looks like a tricycle body but seems more like a tub style buggy. Looks like it would set more like this but obviously not that kind of motor. www.wral.com/golo/image/1930925/
