David:
Good luck this weekend. A Porsche on ice...that makes me shiver all over, and it's not from the cold. :-)
First time I ever spun a car out on dry pavement was a Fitch Sprint Corvair with more than 250 horsepower. It was pretty benign, and gave me a lot of warning. It also made really cool sounds right before I spun it and was able to say "hey, didn't I just come from there?"
Second time I ever spun a car out on a dry road was a 1966 Porsche 911, and it went around more than once. It was not benign at all. I was having a good time at the track, and suddenly I wasn't. Not much of a warning at all. I have always had a bit of apprehension towards early 911s ever since. Amazingly, by '86 or so, they would wash out the front ends on a skidpad before the back end would break free...
And a Porsche on ice...it boggles the imagination.
Bring photos, and video too!
You are a better man than I... :-)
Dave

A cpl.years ago there was a 911 entered in the Sno-Drift up here but he did'nt do well and never came back Razor sharp studded tires will help but not allowed by SCCA Can you use studs Dave?? When we raced Quads on ice we had better traction with ice screws then dry pavment in summer ;D I could hardly believe it ,Madmike

This event is street-legal tires only. So in Michigan that means no studs. I have "performance winter tires" on the car though. I'll let you know how it all turns out.

Ice Racing this weekend was an absolute blast! Trying to hold that car in a drift around sweepers on an icy lake. Let's just say it was very challenging and a lot of fun. This is not wheel-to-wheel racing, but is essentially "autocross on a frozen lake" (but with a more open course obviously). I have autocrossed now for about 4 and a half seasons, but this was my first speed event on ice, and my first speed event in the 912E. It's really such a shame that our beloved Beetles rust so badly, because they would be great at this type of event (in the RWD class. Obviously AWD cars dominated this event overall). I'm very happy to say that on Saturday I took 2nd place in the rear-wheel-drive category, and on Sunday managed to squeak out a 1st. RWD was a small class, I believe my competition both days was limited to myself and 4 or 5 other entrants. Sunday included one other Porsche driver in a 928 (I think - I don't have much interest in cars with engines in the front, so I really don't know the front-engined Porsches well). The ice was extremely slippery and also a bit rough. The upside of this is that I now know all the bits of #548 which were loose - because I had to drive back around and pick them up off the track. (OK, not really, she held together very well.) On Saturday I was however, beaten by Eric in the tan/beige Volvo pictured below He's definitely a talented driver and I suspect he would have had much better luck in a different vehicle. I also have some videos I might eventually post somewhere, but let's face it; like autocross this is something that is extremely fun to do but extremely boring to watch... Some of the pictures are weirdly distorted, my 912E is not actually made out of elastic as they would suggest:

David:
Lookin' Good! (The ski rack is a killer touch!)
You should bring photos to the Bug Run, show folks that air-cooled cars are not just for warm weather.

Marie and I went with John and met Dustin and Matt at US131. We were Rudy's fan club. Unfortunately the event got rained out before we got to see Rudy run. Here are the few videos I shot today. www.youtube.com/watch?v=00u4UaxTcx0

I wanted to go, but, didn't want to risk the rain. Organized some parts instead. There's always next weekend in Allendale!

Thanks everyone for coming out. It had to be about the worst conditions I've seen in 30 yrs of autocrossing. The event was shut down for about 2 hours, but we did get going again. I was in the third heat and the course was nearly all dry by then. Finally left the track at around 7pm. Still having trouble making friends with the 68. Car is great under acceleration or under braking if you are going in a straight line. Doesn't like turning combined with these activities..................we have to get some kind of understanding going on with this car and I.

You've seen me drive mine, and all I can suggest is that you try doing what I do to correct the understeer: Let the rear step out, catch it, and hold it there. Otherwise my 68 has mountains of understeer and just doesn't want to turn. Then again, that's pretty much how I've always driven my beetles, so I don't really know any other way to do it...

I'm planning on coming out with Blu Sunday. See you there! That's great! I look forward to seeing you there. I went out this evening and helped setup the course. Our course-designer (another Dave) did a great job, it is going be a hell of a lot of fun. Rudy? Will you be there?
