No plan to weld the fan. Using it on a basically stock motor, it is probably OK as-is. Figure on saving that as an upgrade for later

Pretty Nice! Maybe ALRO has an aluminum tube/pipe in their drops to replace the stock generator housing. I'm sure that would save another 2lbs.

If the stand is steel rather than aluminum, they are cheap and light. Like $17 and are maybe a pound, maybe less.
I de-blinged the Puma engine, and replaced a chrome one with a raw casting. It was quite a bit lighter.
I am still amazed you could loose 10 lbs. with modifications to the generator.

Part of the weight savings comes from the use of a 90mm 6V generator and comparing it to a 105mm 12V. It took 2 generators to get all the parts for this. One had the same internal diameter all the way thru and the other was counter bored on the fan end. The ID of the straight thru one is approx 3.050 inches. There was one for sale at Lansing where the housing was replaced with 3" Schedule 40 PVC!
The next step for the 68 will probably be an electric fan from a Golf

Good enough for 1/4 mile at a time (hopefully)

It has to work great, as a lot of drag VW's don't use any fan at all. Are you using a smaller power pulley also?

Not using a power pulley so far, but there is one currently in the 68. Unfortunately is is laying on the seat rather than attached to the crank . TOO HOT to install it this week! The problem with no cooling is that the car still gets run at autocrosses. Runs can be 60+ seconds and pretty close together

Thats why you need one for Auto Cross and one for Drag Racing.

The 68 headed out to US 131 last Wednesday for a test and tune session. Made a bunch of runs, mostly 18.5's and kept getting slightly quicker as the temperature dropped. Next to last run of the night produced an all time best of 18.3695!
Then disaster. On what was to be the last run of the night, I really wanted an 18.2xxx and left at 3,000 rpm and powershifted to second, car was running great and it felt good, power shifted to third, or so I thought. When the clutch engaged the car was still in second. The gererator light came on, but I still had a reading on the tach. I reached back to the shift coupler and everthing seems ok. Ended up driving off the track in second and back to the pits. Surprised to find the fan belt still in place. Steve and Bren and I tried to see if we could get it out of second to no avail. The shifter seemed more or less locked in place (neutral position) and the car was in second. Makes it hard to flat tow home. Fortunately Steve talked to the track officials and they allow me to leave the wounded 68 there over night. Hence the new Avatar! (Thanks to Bren for the pic). Went back Thur AM with my trailer and brought it home.
They say things come in three's. I had a trans problem and a generator problem.
Tore into it today. I played with the generator brushes and everything seemed ok. Checked the wiring and found no problems. Replaced the regulator, but light still on. Oh well, time for the Voltless generator update! Found problem #3 when I took off the LR tire: a nail. Figures. On to the trans. I figured either a bent hockey stick or a bent shift fork. When I took the nose cone off, I found the hockey stick in the 3/4 shift rail in neutral position and the 1/2 shift rail extended (in 2nd gear). I've heard this can happen, but never really believed it. I do now.
It will get reassembled over the next week or so and off to the track again in search of that 17.9999 elapsed time............

While you got the tranny out; have you thought of trimming the flywheel or maybe going with an aluminum one (if they're available)?

Going to stay with the stocker on this engine. The next engine has a 12lb 180mm flywheel, so we'll see how it compares then. I really hadn't planned on putting this one back in, but it will be nice to get a direct comparison for the Voltless generator setup.

So you were correct on it skipping out and being between gears. That's what you get for listening to me and power shifting ;D

The power shifting "experiment" definitely took its toll, but was worthwhile. Looking at the times the 68 ran, I'd estimate that it is worth about .03 seconds or so per shift.
The problem is most likely a result of the tired stock shift coupler. I'm thinking upgrading the coupler is definitely in the cars future. I will continue to shift normally in the future, but be able to pick up those few hundredths if necessary when in a close race.

Got the 68 put back together and took it out to the autox last Sat. There were seven of us in the Vintage class: David and I in our VW's, an MGB, a Cosworth Vega, a Volvo 242, an Austin Mini, and a sweet 65 Barracuda. I have always put the front sway bar on for autox and taken it off for drag racing. OOPS! Forgot to put it on. Those of us in the Vintage class worked third heat and ran in the forth. I noticed people having a lot of understeer problems when working and wondered if the no-swaybar setup might just be a positive. Turns out it was a good thing as I held the class lead thru the first three runs. David was knocking on the door, but White 68 VW's were faster than Red 68 VW's this day. The last run the Austin Mini was faster by .2 seconds and David and I had to settle for 2nd and 3rd. It was a great day nonetheless and we both drove our hearts out. This might be the 68's last autox, as I'm thinking about something different for next year.
