I have a holly regulator on the rail. Maybe try eliminating it temporarily and see if it removes the problem. Worthwhile experiment.

I also use the holly regulator. But I am actually changing to some fancy schmancy thing with my Nx setup that Ill be installing soon. Sooooo I may be selling my holly regulator/ fuel gage soon..... Do you have a gage on your regulator so see what it is actually putting out?

Oh and Putumpda is a technical word in the Vw vocab..
It means hard start or the last noise a motor makes before a long walk. Is usually followed by an explicative.
Used in a sentence..... All was working well when all of a sudden it made a noise like Putumpda and then I was like Uh Oh. then I looked out back and was like Oh poop. and looked down that lonley road wondering what use I could make out of that funny stick I found on the side of the road....
Or, I was all set to go to the show and was running late! I jumped in the bug and she turned over fine but all I could get was a Putumpda and then silence.... Uh Oh, I went out back and was like Oh poop what now! Never did that before..... I knew then it was going to be a dirty nails kinda day....

No fuel pressure gage, I really have a bare bones setup. Being on a budget and only getting parts and pieces when I can. I might be interested in the holley regulator and gage. Let me know when you are ready to part with it.

I had an amazing offer fall in my lap. My daughters fiancee claims to have an engine/trans combo that is nolonger needed. He says 500 bucks and its mine. He can't recall the specifics but says it dynod at 470hp single turbo @ 15psi. He also has a dual turbo for it would run at 25psi. He says his dads buggy did low 10s in the 1/4 mile spinning the tire all the way down the track. I would love to put this in my buggy, I am sure this is not a street setup. Maybe a dragster is in my future!

So back to my current engine, I have readjusted the valves. All 4 cylinders are firing now but 1 & 2 are popping out of the exhaust. Now to tear that carb down to clean it. Is there anything else I should be looking at other than a lean carb to resolve the popping?

popping out the exhaust....any chance the exhaust valves are still a tad out of adjustment? Maybe timing a tad off?

I messed with the engine some more. Still no improvement. I wire brushed the plugs, made sure that wires were fully on the plugs, cap is seated on the dizzy, valves adjusted. I have spark, fuel, and timing. I'm totally lost, really thinking about taking the buggy to a professonal.

I had the popping thing (kinda still do but its under control ie much much less noticeable except at extended idle) It was a combo of to open of an exhaust, the wrong fuel jets and the timing being to advanced for the crap fuel I was using. I re-jetted, switched to the mullet muffler, and am now running only premium, also retarded the timing a bit. I may play with adding some E85 to the premium this summer and play with timing.

Need to take care of a bigger issue before I can worry about starting the engine again. Learned at the tech session that mismatch 12volt starter and 6volt flywheel causes problems. I just ran it the way I got it! Need to grind out the bellhousing and get my parts to put it back together. One question, do I need a new gland nut and washer or reuse the old one? Thanks

Spent the day at Patricks yesterday. Got the new flywheel, clutch, pressure plate t/o bearing installed. Sounds much better cranking now! Second time I hit the key the engine started right up without touch the throttle. Still wasn't running well on 1/2 side. The new coil and cap didn't help. Patrick grabbed a new spark plug for number one and it ran better but not even with 3/4. I didn't have the linkage set quite right. 1/2 side carb was off by one or two turns. Ran even and strong, put my spark plug back in and it ran like crap again! Bad plugs! They are brand new! Now to get new plugs and tune the carbs and set timing and I will be of racing!!! I also bought a fuel psi gauge to hard line in. Thanks Patrick
