Hey Joe, Thanks again for the use of your garage! Has the evil fasty been a bad influence on your bug yet?

The bug is almost ready for action as far as I know. The engine is running great. Only issue is the clutch cable. Its a new cable and bowden tube (and bracket) but for whatever reason the bowden tube jumps out of the bracket. The clutch is new and yes I am using the right throwout bearing for the pressure plate
The trans I got is what I believe to be a 73 with a early IRS nosecone. I never did measure the clutch arm but this one seems to have the cable end bind up on the body so I believe its longer. Its almost like the bowden tube is coming up at too severe of an angle.

Well I seem to be the only one with any interest in my fasty project. SO, anyway I'll be working on the Fasty tomorrow, hopefully there will be a running engine in it by the end of Thursday. I'll post some pics and an update tomorrow.
So apparently its already Thursday, so change tomorrow to today...

If the Fasty is running well enough and Job and Family schedule's don't interfere, we hopefully can get the Fasty to the 131 bug run. I believe the car will be at Larry's Off Road show in Dayton, since he is one of our sponsor's. The car may or may not be at the Lane Automotive Show.

Unfortunately there is a problem with the shifter/ shift linkage, the Fasty is now stuck in second gear. So it needs to come apart again to fix that.

How much has to come apart? That is a bummer....

The low down is like this: Went to replace the friction disc, no issues there. Then the stock old style pressure plate for whatever reason was shot. I had an extra late style pressure plate but didn't have the ring to use with the early style throwout bearing. Too much time and effort to swap in the correct cross shafts on the trans (plus it wasn't drilled and tapped for the sleeve thing). Looking at the T/O bearings we determine that the later style is larger in diameter but obviously mounts to the late style cross-shaft. Solution: Shelby just happens to have some Porsche 912 throwout bearing which is larger in diameter but still fits the early cross-shaft style. Get that in and the car drives fine for a few miles until the clutch won't disengage.
He was on the way back to my house to pull the engine so we can sort it all out. The shifter for whatever reason only did 3-4 so then he pulled the lockout plate thing and then had to jam it into 2nd and limp back. As far as I know, its sat since.

OOOOOHHHHHH that's frustrating. These problems are caused by Nissans and Fords. They put bad karma on the air-cooleds to see if the owner will bail. Don't let them win. When the air cooled regains its own karma it will be better than ever

I don't get the Nissan reference or the ford one... Thanks Joe for explaining that. Yes, the car has sat since that happened, it will be at open house this Saturday though. Not sure if the plan is to fix it before or after Saturday.

For those on the east side of the state the Fasty will be on display at Lawrence Tech University's senior projects open house this Saturday April 25, from 11-3, In the Buell Building.

I don't expect the fasty to be in Mi much longer. I believe that when Shelby, the car owner, graduates (in a couple of weeks) the car will go back to Dayton, Ohio and stay they for awhile. Larry's Offroad (the projects sponsor) has a show down there and I believe the car should make it to one of Larry's shows.
