I had a great time at the Old Fort VW show on Saturday.
I had arranged with AJ and Bren to be on the exit ramp in Marshall, and when I saw them on the highway I sped down the ramp and joined them. It felt a little like an old western movie where you see the Indians at the top of the canyon waiting for the wagons to pass below...
The weather kind of stunk...the rain got heavier the closer we got to Ft. Wayne.
Look ma...no speedo!
Bren in the distance. AJ was setting a torrid pace in the stealth bus...
Doesn't this stance look great at speed? When we stopped for gas, Bren was saying his arm got wet. Wonder why?
AJ and Steven in the stealth bus...his arm did not get wet. Might have something to do with having the window closed and not hanging out in the rain...
We arrived around 9:30, had are photos taken, and set up shop. There were not many cars there yet, but the swap meet was in full session. I did not find any Cibie Z beam headlights, and Bren did not find his 010 dizzy. I consoled myself by heading to the food tent, where I heard two of my favorite words. Biscuits and gravy...and they are even better when you use them together! Can't beat $4.00 for B&G with a glass of orange juice...
Won a cool VW backpack as a door prize. There is a lesson here...when they draw 3 or 4 door prizes at a time and there are about 15 cars there, you have a pretty good chance to win something.
It rained lightly most of the day, except when it would stop just long enough to get your hopes up. There were a couple of folks who wiped their car off two or three times. I did not take any photos until the afternoon just before the awards ceremony.
Maggie had a good day there. She won the 50-50, and picked up one of the top 4 awards, which looked really cool. Her car just seems to look better and better every year.
I was surprised to win another Top-25 trophy, and it will look cool next to the one from last year in my office.
The park emptied pretty quick after the ceremony, but I was able to snap a few photos before heading out.
My favorite air-cooled car at the show. Beautifully done, and a great color combination. Trust me, it's even nicer in person. Also, I liked the four-legged intruder detection system. Unfortunately, I found you could easily bypass it if you scratched her behind the ears. ;D I suspect if you had a few treats, she might even point out where the owners keep the spare ignition key...
Hey, I just like orange cars...
Some very nice GTIs
Bren would have taken this Corrado home in a second. I love the clean Audi wheels.
Best sticker of the day was on the Corrado. Only our autocrossing members get it...right Rudy?
My favorite water cooled car. Serious as a heart attack. LOVE the satin-black hood to keep reflections out of your eyes. Shades of my 96 rally cars, the black hood thing really does work in keeping reflections out of the eyes. Looks cool too...
Engine innapropriate for Clinton and Madmike. By the way it's in a nice German-look super. A lot of nice pieces here that are giving me ideas...
I had a great time again...and other than our shows, this is my favorite. I would even come again in the rain, and in case you don't know, the Pig of Plastic is not happy in the wet. That says something.
Bren and his nephew left early because he had to go to Saginaw to drop him off before going home and getting ready to head to Chicago at O-Dark-Hundred on Sunday. AJ and Steven left at the end, and I followed them back to Michigan. The only thing that could have improved on the day would have been a little better weather, and even more Good Volks there!
Stopped for gas and dinner, and the weather had cleared up enough to put the top down to dry everything out on the inside. I decided to to take a less "direct" route home that was only about 25 miles further, and spent quite a bit of it at high rpm. ;D
