Sunday and Monday of this long weekend was spent on the brakes. I had working brakes on the green bus so it should just be a quick swap right. Wrong!!!
The rears were the worst. I started disassembling what I had from the new bus and it was not much. First up removing the adjusters. No matter how much I smash them with a hammer I could not pop the adjusters from the holder. So I will just remove the adjuster holder from the backing plate. Nope VW thought that they would be smart and spot weld the adjuster holder to the backing plate. I found that out by inserting a chisel between the backing plate and the adjuster holder and destroying the backing plate in the process.
Ok now I will just swap the backing plate with all the stuff attached from one bus to the other. Now it just sounds to easy it's just held on by 4 bolts.........
And a stupid PIN. The pin I guess is an alignment pin for the backing plate on the hub.
It took hours of hammer swinging to pop all 4 of the rear backing plates from the hub. All because of the pin that over 40 years welded its self to the rear hub and the backing plate.
During the assembly I forgot to install the alignment pin. Now disassembly in the future will be much easier.
It took 2 days but I have switched my whole working brake assembly from one bus to the other bus. All that is left is to bleed the system and check for leaks.

I found out that the person that painted my Ghia also does some wood working on the side. So I asked him to see if he had enough scrap wood around to make me a table for my Bus. This is what he gave me on Tuesday Now the problem is that I have to make the rest of the Bus match.

I have a 4" hole saw and I am thinking of cutting a hole on the body above the fuel sender unit. So if I ever have to replace the sender I have access. Without the access hole I would have to remove the engine to get to the fuel tank. Then I can make a removable cover from the other Bus.
Should I do this modification or not it would make it easier to work on but I am cutting a huge hole in vintage sheet metal.

No AJ, no! Don't cut a hole in it. Buy a new sender, install it, and call it a day. If you look at your time, it will cost you more to cut, grind and file the hole and cover than just buying a new sender.

I have seen it done but if the sender is working I wouldn't do it,besides you could just pull the motor to get to the tank. I have thought about doing it myself if my sender goes bad (i should of changed the sender when I had the motor and tranny out before).

Here is the deal on my green bus the fuel gauge worked for one day and that's it. I was planning on checking stuff when I had the engine out to replace the generator but I bought a different bus instead.
On the black bus I yanked out the tank its rusty and no good. So I will use the fuel tank from the green bus. I checked the fuel gauge on the black bus by grounding out the sender wire the gauge pegged to full so the gauge works.
I just don't want to install the engine fill the tank then find out the sender unit does not work. Yes I know that I can purchase a new sending unit but I am cheep. Will the new sender have a 100% guarantee that it will work from the box? NO
I really hate yanking a motor to replace small stuff but I don't like drilling holes in the cars that I am trying to save.
Ok you have convinced me not to cut a hole in my bus I will just hope the sender works.

Sorry Thanks for all of the comments on the checker board and he did a good job from scrap wood. I just realized that I never told anyone my plans for the bus. The first goal is to get it running and on the street. I am almost there. Second comes this winter when I plan on purchasing new grey front seat covers from TMI. Then the whole interior will be removed for finishing. I plan on fixing all of the damaged wood and removing the cracked laminate then painting the wood. I plan on making new closet doors in oak. Also all the door panels and rear driver-side panels will be made from thin oak covered plywood. I even plan on using oak veneer to in-lay the dash board. All of the oak will be varnished to match the checker board. The rear seats will be covered in a grey fabric of my choice. The entire floor will be carpeted with the same carpet from my Ghia but in gray. It will be a busy winter / spring. Then camping in the summer i even have plans for my fridge / sink combo and bumpers but that will be later. Next summer / fall I may do body work and a fresh coat paint in cream or white top and medium blue lower. Lets just see what happens. ever find a use for the tonnue cover? Sorry but yes I did it is currently being used for its intended purpose. Keeping the rain from entering the huge hole in the top of my green bus. Thanks again it fits perfect
