Are you going to keep heat in the car or just run 100% aftermarket exhaust? A good header and a big muffler will give it some more power......

That's what we have on the Super Beetle and my brother-in-law has on his Bus. I love the sound of the GT.

Cleaned and degreased the air intake system Need some grey paint to freshen it up a bit and some emery cloth on the brass tubes. Ordered a rear 1/4 floor pan to fix some rust through. Custom fabricator will patch it in for me.

My fan shroud before: shroud after 2 days immersed in white vinegar, notice the extra engine tins didn't clean up as nice. Vinegar works on surface rust unless there is heavy pitting, bubbling. Vinegar will remove some paint but didn't get it all. I let the small piece bottom left soak for 4 days and paint still didn't come off. Also won't remove grease if it's left on.

Here's the homemade soda blaster I made for $6. Bought a 50 lb bag of medium particle soda at Harbor Freight. My borrowed compressor does about 5.6 cfm which I've decided isn't enough. Recommended min speed is 7 cfm. It worked ok but used a lot of soda and burned a hole through my homemade nozzle after about 20 minutes. May be using to aggressive of a soda for that.

Here is a side by side before and after result on my aluminum throttle body. Looks way better but wasn't completely satisfied. Can also see a before shot of the throttle body I posted above.

Used the soda to touch up the shroud. Finished tin and manifolds. One tin was pitted pretty bad. Manifolds turned out great. For all the work, I think buying new tins would have been a lot easier.

Ordered new header and quiet pack from Chirco. Also got a starter kit of Por-15 to try out on some tins and the shroud. Yet to do: - degrease and paint case
- strip paint, de-rust and repaint engine compartment
- pull and check clutch
- reassemble engine
lots of tedious things to accomplish yet

Ray thanks for the plug. Mike your project is looking good. Do they sell NEW F.I. engine tin? I also would like more info on your home made soda blaster. Keep up the good work. Thanks Dave T

I haven't seen new engine tins for FI which is why I'm restoring them. However since I'm eliminating the heater boxes, in hindsight I could have bought some normal tins preferable some that eliminate the heater pipe holes.

"normal" head tins are shaped differently, they are straight along the outer edges and won't seal against a FI body.

Pulled the clutch, flywheel. Big oily mess. Every time I think I"ll have it back together for the July 10 Bug Run I get another set back. Grr...... Too much to do yet. Back to the store for more degreaser and mineral spirits. Need a 5 gallon drum.
