I've been playing around with getting replacement front seats for my '68 bug. Has anyone has a set they have especially liked? Ideally I would like to go with vinyl replacements with as close to a stock appearance as possible, but with added support and a more secure fit (for autocross). Critical to me is that these don't raise the seating position, as I still use the stock VW steering wheel and I'm fairly tall (knees already rub every time I enter or exit the vehicle). I've also looked at these as a possibility. Getting the tracks is an additional $199 for the set though! Ouch. www.appletreeauto.com/procar-sportsman-seat-c-389-p-1-pr-4274.html

There are many seat options out there but they are all pretty pricey and will add height but you can take a stock pair of seats and cut the bottoms and fabricate them to the new seats. Or you can get crafty with a welder and some foam on a stock pair since you want to maintain stockish appearance and have a little extra support. Maybe someone else can chime in better.

Had 240 sx seats in the buggy. Really liked em too. Very cheep at a junkyard or ebay. It is a PIA to retrofit though. Welding and reengineering is required. But for 50.00 (got my set cheep) it was worth the hassel.

The previous owner of my car installed seats from a Pontiac Sunfire (Chevy Cavalier). He modified the stock seat track to accept these seats, and set the seats about 2" rearward when mounting them to the track. I am 6'4", so this makes the Beetle very driveable for me! Plus, the seats are comfy and look decent (black plaid).

Hmmm, you know, I hadn't thought about taking my seats apart and just modifying the foam support-structure to give me what I want. That's an interesting idea. I'll also consider that as I look through my options.

My favorite seats were the ones in my GTI. They were not original they came from a later model Cabro. The seats were leather and very comfy. I loved them because they had unusual high side pads. I could throw that car into any corner and the side of the seat would hold me in.

My 70 now has an Audi 4000 driver's seat. If you look at the bottom along the tunnel you will see that I welded a "foot" on the tube to bolt it down after cutting the tubes to the length needed. The front mount has a piece of sq tube welded between the original tracks with a tab to bolt thru the Audi center mount. The seat is a little too wide for the bug and is offset about an inch from the steering wheel centerline, but it feels fine just sitting in the garage. Sorry, but this is all I can do for pics for now
