Hi. I've been meaning to hop over to this thread and introduce myself for a while. I met a few of you at the drag-race at the end of last year, which was great fun.
I'm from Grand Haven and have 1968 Bug (pics below) restored and repainted in "royal-red" - her original color. This is my third bug and I've had her now for over 20 years. My first beetle was a metallic-bronze '69 - but was too rusty to realistically save at the time. Then I graduated to a baby-blue '72 (oops, '74 I think) super during my college years. I keep her "close to stock" in most ways. Her brief history as far back as we know it: She was discovered as a salvageable car in an Ohio junkyard from the gentleman I purchased her from. He did a lot of basic restore work and re-paint, but she still needed some further attention. I used her in that form for about 5 years, at which point I moved to Boston for 3 years and left her at a restoration shop during that period (you don't want a car you care about in Boston). That makes the current restoration job and paint around 13 years old (obviously she is garaged). The only major repair I've had to do is an engine replacement when the original gave out. So she now has a 1600 single-port from a '69 in her (runs much stronger than the original engine!).
She is basically a driver which I attempt to keep running, driving, and looking as nice as possible for a car which still sees several thousand miles each year during the spring, summer, and fall months. I also started driving her in Autocross a few summers back and am very much enjoying that. For that reason, you'll probably see me move to the "Motorsports" thread for the most of my postings.
My current project for the spring is getting a few under-body repairs completed at a local body-shop and doing a complete front-end overhaul. I'm also slowly doing some very minor customizing of the suspension (anti-sway bars etc.) for auto-crossing, but will discuss that more in the appropriate thread.
One thing I'm looking to do soon is replace my stock seats (just the fronts), with something that has better support. My current seats are getting to the point where they are breaking-down again. I want to replace them with something that looks as close to stock as possible (still black vinyl), but which provides a nicer driving experience. Obviously something which uses the stock seat-rails would be preferable. Any suggestions as to where to look would be appreciated.
Hope to see some of you out at an autocross or at a GoodVolks meeting soon!
