www.mrheater.com/productdetails_extended.asp?id=338&catid=41Might have to disable the tip over feature. but maybe not, and if so it is easily done. Aught to be toasty. I have a much much larger version and it is safe and makes lots of heat. Only 5 hours run time to a bottle but still thats a long ass drive.

Where would you place that in the car, Dan? I have no heat either, so would be curious to find out how this works for you.

Interesting idea. I would be afraid of potential fires.

Why not go with a gas heater, proven heat maker for a VW. Doesn't effect mileage that much and will cook you out of the car, can be hooked up to a timer. By the way I have a couple if you need one. Lets make a deal!! Later Kenn

Ok those gas heaters ARE dangerous and are expensive 200.00 and up. I got a deal on the propane heater on ebay for like 62.00 delivered. The propain deal is actually very safe and even has an auto turn off if it uses up too much o2 or tips over (though I may disable the tip feature,,,,,depends. I got a large ass one of these and it is super safe and have never had a problem with it. Only way you could screw up is to have it facing something flamable and even then it would take a while I dont intend to leave this unattended or on high for that matter. Ill just set it for low and let it warm me up. Nice and cozy I can use this heater in my tent (I do a LOT of camping and our tent is HUGE) Gas heater not so much so. I plan to mount it in the rear speaker board in the middle facing torwards the windshield. For testing purposes when I first get it, Ill have it on the pass floor, zip tied so it does not flop over so I can keep an eye on it.

Sounds like a interesting idea. I would make sure that it was VERY secure in case of a collision or a roll over. I would have it with in arms reach so I can shut it off fast and away from any thing flammable. But winter is almost over now right. Just for you info Kenn has a heater to sell www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=592564

The gas heater looks scary old. Some things do not age well (take me for instance ) Im sure it needs something (rebuilt) to work safely and correctly. Nature of the beasty. Plus I dont want 13mpg The 1 pound propain tanks are cheap and last 5 hours each. If the thing tips over it has an auto shut off. In an accident Im dead anyway, Im in a 43 year old car that has been sliced and diced Im sure it will fold like an accordian. I dont have any misunderstanding about my safety in the bug. Thats why I drive it differently than I did my Trans Am. I still love it dearly and am willing to take the risk. When the kids/wife are in it Im super aware of what is around me and generally drive like a grandpa. When alone I can get a little jiggy with it and understand and accept the responsability. It will be well secured with zip straps like you would a stand up fire extinguisher (about the same size) I hear the tip sensor is so sensitive if it is nudged hard enough it will turn off. I may make a toggle switch that will be able to disable this feature for bumpy roads. I want heat and I think this will work. If not I have that tent heater Ive been wanting. Dan

Well I got my heater (yeaaaa!!) And I got to admit the head of the thing is a smidge bigger than I was expecting (picture one of those huge flashlights that take the big square batteries). Anyway the only other thing I was not thrilled about was there is only one heat setting (the other "bigger" unit is variable). It does work well though. Im going to make a base for it for right now to fit in the right front footwell. The tipover shutoff is not as touchy as some said and while it will turn the thing off if tipped a bit It is not effected by up and down movements or by just moving it. I think it was designed to be moved around while lit which is good for me . I learned if you touch the screen while it is lit it will burn your hand awfull nice OUCH!!! I think I might have gone with the other unit if I had to do it again as it is really not bigger (just squarish instead of up and down skinny) and probably more stable without a platform, also it has variable heat. Ill give updates as I learn to utilize my new toy. It warmed the car up nice for this mornings drive that is for sure. I opened a quarter window as it gets the windows wet on the inside. when I drove off it tipped over as I have not secured it yet and the tipover feature just turned it off and no harm done.
