I need some help. I tried to build my first engine 6 years ago. I bought a 2276 engine kit from cb performance. I assembled it, blue printed it and tuned it the best I could. Eventually I broke down and got help from Doug's Bugs and Bunnies in Az to help tune the webbers. I read the webber book I just dont have a knack for carbs. I moved to back home to Mn and went on my first drive with my car. 200 miles on the motor or so befor this point. Well I blew my oil filter into two piece in less than 1/4 block. Apparently 20W50 was a little to thick in mn. When that happened i saw there was a LOT of glitter in the oil. It wasn't all from that one event. Fast forward to the recent. I brought my engine here to michigain to rebuild. I don't want to make the same expensive mistakes. I want to build this engine, but I need help to insure I don't make the same mistakes. Can someone point me in a direction or am I just going to have to pay someone to build it for me. I don't want to do that because I learn nothing, but I don't want to make another expensive learning mistake. The kit is a 2276 engine builder kit. www.cbperformance.com/product-p/1185.htmThe only deviation from the kit is that I was using a 009 distributor and mad blaster as coil with a 6Al-2(?) box. I can't remember. This was in and will be going in again a 74 superbeetle named Herb. Thanks for your time. -John Yes I still want a MSD distributor unless I learn otherwise.

Hi John, have you taken your motor apart yet? Not completely. I have to split the case to inspect the cam, lifters and bearings. End play measured .009 inches. I don't have my gently book or my blue print to see where I set it. I do see I set up my valve train geometry wrong I'm fairly ceetain.

You my as well continue and see what everything looks like. I can introduce you to Jim Green and he can inspect your case to see if any machine work is needed. Jim is up by Owasso.

I hope it doesn't considering I know I have less that 1000 miles on the motor. Maybe 500 would be more like it. I'm in Howell so Jim isn't to far away.

Well. I don't need to do anything to the case.
I verified my boo boo. I Didnt set up my valve train correctly. This wore the lifter bores unevenly, my cam unevenly. So rockers, pushrods, lifters, case... done.
The good news is I can save the crank and flywheel. The gears. Heads. Piston and jugs I could probably reuse.
Yeah, so few thousand dollar learning experience.
So looks like someone has to write a letter to Mr. Santa Clause.
