As a new member, I'll begin by introducing myself. I'm Ryan Koch. My Uncle, Bren Hartman recommended that I become involved in the good volks and so I am. I'm currently living in Norfolk, Va(a far cry from MI), but Michigan is where I grew up. Late last year I bought my first and currently my only VW, a 72 Super Beetle.
Not that I was expecting primo performance from her, I was especially not expecting to snap a rod and render my engine scrap after 80 miles on the highway considering an advertised >500 miles since being rebuilt. Since that tragic day, I've managed to put together enough parts to assemble a respectable 1915cc and just this week I brought the block to an automotive machine shop for put-togetherdom(note-this is only the way I type; not the way I talk).
Anyhow, the mechanic said that I was looking good but for he suspected that a washer or two was required to keep the distributor drive gear from creating friction with the case on the bottom end. I said, "I don't know. I bought this as a kit and it didn't come with washers like that." So, my questions are: is/are there a washer/s that goes there? if so, what are the specifications of said washer/s?
Once I finish with the engine assembly I'll be looking to inspect my transaxle to determine it's condition, replace any part of my brake system that needs replacing(maybe install front disc brakes), lower the car a few inches, replace the exterior rubber, and restore my entire interior.
I'm sure that when I look, I'll find countless boards and sources for info on doing any of the things I just mentioned but, being the first time I've done any of those things, I need all the help that I can get. So feel free to let me know any tips you might know, send me links that are usefull, or recommend products; everything helps.
Nice meeting you and until next time,
Ryan.
I have pictures!
the left side...
moderate fading with a small helping of rust...
PRIMO!
