Mike, when I was putting my hands all over your motorinnapropriate, I noticed those rods were nice and snug. What oil clearance were you running on them? Don't you normally run a slightly looser oil clearance on high performance engines? Just wondering, because it felt like a nice factory fresh tolerance. Never messed with any performance stuff, just 1600's and T4 stuff. Educate me.

I run german 'Gute-n-tite' specs Their not that close I'll check but I mod the bearings too so it's never a problem I have STP on them so they might of felt tight to u Dirk?

I be that could be why they felt on the snug side. In the past I have always used Lucas Assembly Lube, also sticky as snot, had a similar effect. Using it again for the current build cause it works and available pretty much everywhere. Good for bearings, good for cams.
Are your 94s forged or cast?

Agreed. Cast cranks are poop from what I have seen. Not sure who thought that was a good idea in the first place. Probably some bozo that realized that half the vw guys out there will always by the cheapest parts available twice as frequently. Hahaha
Not sure what the factory 93s were, but I think they are just cast. They held up well. I'm reusing the stock ones because they are still in almost new spec. Cylinders are getting honed/opened up slightly as per VWs tech bulletin from the 80's to increase skirt clearance. Also gona do the recomended oil mod they specified in the bulletin. Pretty simple. Just putting a couple notches in the rod to help direct more oil to the cylinders.
