I personally do not like progressives. They take a good bit of fussing around with jetting to get them to work properly. And when you get them working properly, they aren't exactly show stoppers. My opinion, if he is looking to drop money on a new set of carbs, just get a set of HPMX or IDF's.
MadMike is a pro with IDF style carbs. He will be able to tell you just about anything you could possibly want to know about them.

slap it on that 1641 and lets ride. Sand rails have an on/off switch ON up the hill OFF down the hill. The flats are so rough and chopped up you perfect carb will splash over anyways and black puffs will come out. I like them.

Progressives never worked on the pinto's "NEEDS heated intake!!' Biggest POS ever slapped on a VW engine (besides the colored/clear caps&wires ) single two barrel? ? good o'l Zenith Prefer IDF's like Dirk said Some peeps like 'Dells',, but I like something I can still buys parts for. So Dave,Tell the Nephew to do his research!!!! and he has all winter to save up $$$,, 40idf's will work on anything from 1600-2110cc

I have jets for progressive, IDF, Dells, and solex/kadrons, if he needs them. I too prefer IDF's, but, have been known to run what I got, even a progressive or k dogs.

Being somewhat of a KISS guy, I always like the factory carbs. I got lucky that DaveT just happened to have a pair of factory dual Solex PDSIT's for my project. Fire breathers they are not, but they are dirt simple and work well. Pretty hard to go wrong with those and the factory dizzy.
