Anybody ever use those easy-out extractors to remove snapped off bolts? I have two M8 bolts that some bozo snapped off in a blower flange that need to get removed. Last thing I want to do is chew up the treads in an otherwise good part.

I have used a set. My set was purchased from Sears. They are square with an edge on each side. Sometimes they work other times they don't. If they don't work the next step is to try and weld a bolt to them and see if they come out. Last thing is to drill and retap. Good luck.

I have had luck with the ones that look like a left hand screw thread. Drill the hole all the way through the bolt if you can. It helps relieve the internal stress in the bolt. But don't break the ez-out off. It's so hard you will never drill it out.

The left hand spiral ones I have seen before. The square ones I have never heard of before. I see the tapered left hand spiral ones all over the place. Guess I will get a set for 5/16in and 8mm bolts.

Heat & PB Blaster is your 'friend', I have even done 'Boiled in oil' trick to loosen things up Circlips on the piston can pop out, spiral locks or Teflon buttons won't away install the clips so the opening is ether up or down never sideways!!!as in toward the rod or piston,if that makes since?

Thanks Mike, I'll try to give it some heat just before trying to back it out with an easy-out extractor. So, Mike, you are telling me that this internal snap ring must be oriented a specific way? That interests me because I have never heard of that, and I have never seen an internal snap ring pop out. I have, on the other hand, seen those d**n piston retaining ring wires pop out of the type 1 engines and ruin the piston and cylinders. I can't imagine that it would stay oriented the way the ring was installed for long at all once the engine starts throwing that piston back and fourth.

There is a little "flat" side and a "rounded" side on them when they get stamped. When we install them at work we install them so the FLAT side will be facing outwards as to have the pressure pushing on them. If the rounded side were out the pressure could POP or push them out.

Note taken about the profile of the snap rings. Thanks guys! I learn something new from the seasoned veterans every week. Hahaha, Mike, don't be such a downer about these engines. They actually have a little more top end than the factory Type 1 engines did. 5600 redline if I remember correctly.
