I have found a serious problem with a CB Performance Hi-Flo Maxi Filter Sump Kit. (What a mouthful!) For those who are not familiar with this, this is a kit that replaces the sump and sump strainer with a steel mesh filter and other parts that supposedly provide full-flow filtering with a permanent steel mesh that has about 100 times more area. The replacement sump has an area for this filter to fit, and for $40, it looked like a good deal. Bren said he used one, and it worked fine, so I went on ahead and purchased one. Here is a link for the kit: www.cbperformance.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=1756I decided to put on today (Dorothy is out of town...) and it is quite straightforward. There were some issues, because there is a bypass spring to allow oil to bypass the filter in case you "filter" becomes plugged which makes it a little more difficult to install, but once I used a small floor jack to hold the sump plate in place, and compress the filter, it installed great. Then I found the problem. The 10mm socket will not fit fully in the recess for the nut! Holy $hit! As a temporary solution, I took a Craftsman 10mm deep socket, and ground enough material off of the socket to allow it just fit. Thank goodness that it only requires 60 inch pounds of torque...there is not much material left. I sent an email to Pat Downs at CB Performance explaining the problem. I will let everyone know what he says. David Riedle

Madmike: When the motor comes apart, I plan on drilling and tapping a boss for the return line for a real filer...until that point comes, this unit is much better than the stock oil strainer. Shouldn't leak either because it does not use the silly VW gasket + strainer + gasket nonsense. Dave Riedle
