Ok so the frame I picked up has a swing axle torsion in it. Have thought about putting IRS piviots in it. Question is which should I use? Yes it will be street legal, Yes it will go to the dunes.

Mine is swing axle. I have had no problem with it. I did put limit straps on. One time I got on it on the street, turning out of taco bell, and it power slid pretty good. Decided after that I wanted to limit the opportunity for the wheel to tuck. Other than that no issues with swing. Going to IRS may give you more gearing options. However, that stuff is over my head. Best left to the experts who I am sure will chime in right about......now.

Until you get to the situation where increased travel would be a significant improvement, I would go swing axle. installed and maintained correctly, they are pretty bulletproof.and cheaper.

I use a Sway-a-Way camber stop like those that are used on racing Puma's. It works similar to limit straps, and does not impede upward travel.
Works well. The setup is pretty bullet-proof, and is often considered more reliable than IRS. Puma chose to use swing-axles over IRS for handling prowess.

"TOLD YA" If a swing axle holds up to your Dads driving(on the sand)it must be fairly bullet proof. But every thing has its limits.

I would go ahead an weld in the Piviots,, that way if/when the swing fails u have an option of slapping in a IRS ,IRS has a better option for longer travel and a CV joint/axle is easy/quick to change and step up to bigger Bus/930 Porsche CV's cuz thoes are the weak links and Big Paddles and holeshots will find the weaklinks ,Swingaxles are a bit stronger stock for that/for awhile anyhow (rofl)Street with IRS won't tuck like bren sez on fast cornering but a Camber Compensator for Swingaxle will help but gives a stiffer ride off-road,Hope this Helps Steven ,Madmike

And just running a swingaxle. Just wanted some opinions. Trying to be cost effective (cheap). Now to find a drum to drum swingaxle.

Stock for stock, I think the swing axle is stronger...but that is just my opinion.
That being said, IRS is much easier to beef up, has better geometry (less camber/toe change), and has more upgrade options.

I have a thing floor pan I plan to scrap, you could have the torsion housing from it for cheap, It is factory reinforced over stock T1 housing, think trailing arms are beefed up also. rwk
