Have the seal installed on the windshield. The chrome trim came off the old one that's still on the car easily. So now comes the fun part of installing the chrome trim on the seal following youtube videos and using lots of the KY. Then it'll be overlapped rope into the outer channel of the seal using more of the KY. When I'll wind up installing the glass, I'm not sure. It depends on what friends are available to push in on the glass as I pull the rope I guess. It will be a good exercise in patience to put the chrome in the seal I bet.

Wipers now work after a ground issue and locked up pivot were fixed.

A few parts came in the mail today and got installed. Namely a domelight (it works fine after some bulb contact tweaking) and a new Brosol Brazilian choke. The choke looks awfully strange where the spade terminal comes out of the housing. There's white epoxy or something everywhere holding the plastic block in place. As long as it works I don't care. Now to get some fuel line and it'll be back on the road. Also, after looking at the radio I decided to take a photo. It's some sort of EMPI item. After doing a search on thesamba, apparently they're somewhat rare? Beats me. I put these photos in an old EMPI radio thread too to keep it's existence with other members of its kind. From thesamba thread: Mine: After looking them up, wow. www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?submit=yes&type=text&keywords=empi+radio

Wow indeed!
If yours works well, what a deal! I can see why these would be expensive, with the vintage EMPI logo, and VW only faceplate. These were probably somewhat expensive when new, and for some reason, VW folks seem to be totally fascinated by VW accessories. I saw a driver's training mirror, which had two smaller actual mirrors, one for the driver, one for the instructor. Interesting, but not particularly useful for real-world driving.
It was $750. Not certain why, because it's for driver's training.
There was a mention of this same mirror in Hot VW magazine a couple of years ago, and it was in there as well, but the owner had a couple of these brand new in the original box in an article called "rarest of the rare".
In my opinion, yours is far more useful, and far more desirable. Looks to be in great shape as well.
Congratulations!
Dave

Thanks Dave! I'm trying to figure out the wiring for it so I don't fry anything if I do decide to hook it up. There isn't a ground wire coming off of it. I found a guy on thesamba who is an EMPI parts guru and sent him an email asking about wiring one up.
A driving mirror for that much money? Holy crap that's insane!

If I had to guess, the body of the radio is the ground. Without seeing what you have for wires, red or orange is usually 12v +. Green, grey, yellow, brown or white are usually speaker outputs. How many wires, 4? You probably have a 12v+, a left + speaker output, a right + speaker output, and a common speaker output (if it's stereo. mono will have 1 less wire) and ground the body. This is just a guess and it could explode if you hook it up following any of my advice... ;D

I was guessing body is ground too. There's a funny bracket going down from the wiper motor 10mm ground bolt that has an L shape to it that the radio sits on. It was getting dark when I was trying to figure out wiring but there were only 3 wires to the best of what I could see. A grey joined pair (guessing speaker) and blue one with a white inline fuse holder similar in design, but not shape, to the backup light fuse holder in my 71 bug and 70 bus etc were 3 my wires. The blue is probably the 12V+. The antenna plugs into the bottom of the radio, not the back like the Sapphires I've played with in my beetle and buses (and got in the box from Dave T.) The speaker looked to be missing a male spade terminal to hook it up.
Fuel line replacement is my main thing now. The new choke works, but now air bubbles into the filter from the pump side in the engine compartment between the carb and pump. The engine isn't hot when this happens. That tells me it's sucking air from the line by the trans that had a black/plugged filter that I recently found and replaced. I didn't however replace the rubber line.

That is a NICE bonus in that buy!!! If you sell the radio it brings down the purchase price, or it finances the rebuild!!!!

The radio works. I ran a ground from the radio body to the wiper motor ground. Then I hooked up a speaker and the power wire. The 5.25 is too big and is held in by 1 screw. Oh well. It picked up static and some faint voices. I'll have to fine tune the antenna or something, then figure out how to switch between AM and FM. There are only volume, on/off, treble, and tuner controls on the dials. Then 3 AM presets and 2 FM presents.

Bye bye EMPI AM/FM radio. It's going to a new home in Puerto Rico to finish an EMPI GTV restoration. Time to find a block off plate or the right Sapphire radio I suppose. After the $ goes to fix the 68 westy anyway. Now I don't have to sell this bug to fund the westy!

Nick, are the blockoffs year specific, or pretty much generic? I might be able to hook you up.

To the best of my knowledge the hole is the same size from 1958-1967.
