Check this beast out.
Some dude put this Continental radial engine on a bug. With a bore/stoke of 5.25/4.625," this seven cylinder engine displaces just short of 700 cubic inches (approximately 11 liters) and produces between 210-240 horsepower.
Best of all, it's air cooled!
Pure awesomeness...

Hahaha, yeah, those radial engines always start up smokey...must have something to do with the little bit of oil that drains down into the lower cylinders while it is not running.
I thought you guys would get a kick out of this. I guess if you had a spare radial engine on hand, and a dumpy car to put it on...hey, cheep entertainment for everyone else ;D

Actually that reminds me of a buddy of mine. We were talking about locomotive engines and stuff. The EMD engine is 710 cubic inches per cylinder, and has 16 cylinders...thats a total displacement of 11,360 cubic inches. He laughed when I said it made 4,400hp, then proceded to tell me that he could make that much power with four tricked out Duramax engines...
...True...you could...but the EMD engines can run near or at full power for a decade before they start getting tired. The tricked out Duramax engines...maybe a couple minutes near full load before they completely blow???
The stock VW engines really are beastly though. How many other 40hp engines do you know of that weigh a sack of corn short of 200 lbs? The Beetle was a relatively light car...but you gota know that those engines were giving it all they had to move the funny little car down the highway...and they did that for 100,000 miles before getting tired. If you think about it from that perspective, thats a super reliable engine!!! For a fair comparison, imagine putting a GM 350 engine (very reliable in factory installations) into a delivery truck. Anyone wan't to guess how many miles that truck would go before it needed an engine rebuild? I'm guessing less that 100,000, how about you?
Yeah, in my opinion, the air cooled VW engines are beastly little monsters.

Sorry to spam this thread, but has anybody ever watched air cooled VW engine blow tests?

Hahaha, wow. I love it that the back of the pickup starts to hop around while the VW just pulls smoothly.
