I just bought a used air compressor. It's a single-stage. I found a manual on-line for it. The manual says not to use automotive oil (10W-30) but it does not say what type of oil to use. It says to use the oil that came with the compressor!? What type of oil should I use?

there are oils made for compressors, available at Grainger, etc. Most of the older compressors will be fine with non-detergent motor oil, usually 30W.

Most auto supply places also sell compressor oil, as well as Sears, Harbour Freight, True Valve Hardware even Meijers.

I haven't checked the auto parts store yet, but Meijer's only had oil for the air tools sopplied by the compressor. So would 30W non-detergent be ok?

30W non-detergent is fine.

Thanks Paul and Kenn. I'm still cleaning the compressor and looking for a few accessories. I'll look at some local auto parts stores and hardware stores for compressor specific oil. If I don't find any I'll go with the 30W.

I watched a video about air compressors on U-Tube last night. It was from Campbell-Hausfeld; which is the brand I have. They said a suitable oil would be MOBILE 1 10W30. I guess the synthetic oils are ok for air compressors.

Hi Brian, mine's been running since 1992 with Amsoil compressor oil. I've changed it twice. They offer two types, depends on what type of compressor & valves you have. If the manufacturer recommends 10w30 Mobil 1, I'd use it. Readily available and great stuff. Just a suggestion. Change the oil after 8-10hrs, then put a label or piece of tape with the date, type of oil & quantity on the compressor some place. You'd be surprised how easy it is to neglect it. Having the info right there is a reminder. Also, don't forget to service the air filter and belt tension/condition. Enjoy your new toy

You should be able to find compressor oil at farm and home or tractor supply company.

Thanks Ray and Harley. There's new Tractor Supply opening nearby my work. I'll check it out. Good advice on the oil change Ray; I'll do that.
The compressor is a 1.3 hp direct drive unit. I bought it at a garage sale because it is a 120 volt unit. I need to get 200 amp service to my house before I put my big compressor in service. For now, the little one will serve me fine.
