I sent an e mail to 131 msp requesting info about required safety gear for a buggy. I need to get a 5 point harness and arm restraints. Surprised I don't need a roll cage. are the shoulder straps long enough to reach the floor? I found some cheap sets of harnesses on eBay but they are expired. does anyone know if I need current dates on the harness?

I'm not certain, but they do put the dates on for a reason...
I would think that being safe would outweigh the cost.
Just my opinion...

I would recommend calling and asking more specific questions and tell them more about your buggy. I only had 4 point harness in my rail that had a 1915 in it. You will also need a helmet in an open car. I would also ask about the roll cage. If you have nothing, tell them that. Better to be sure than get turned down last minute.

Yup I told them no roll cage, thats probably the reason they said i need to have a 5 point harness. I want to put in a cage this winter anyway. I got looking at summit and their price for a race harness wasn't bad at all, like you said better safe than sorry. I am not going to race this year, too much to buy to get ready for it. 2013 spring bug run for sure.

Well, you can always see if they will let you do a fun run. Good way to get the feel for it. And get addicted to it. ;D

They are somewhat relaxed when it comes to the fun runs...but, when I ran, well... I was lined up against Danny in his tub. Danny had no helmet, NO cage or roll bar, and an open tub. I had a helmet, 5 point harnesses, a 4 point "show" cage, and an open sunroof, they ALMOST didn't let me make the pass, then told me, if I wanted to run again, I had to find a sunroof panel! You can see the starter telling me in the video.

That sounds strange. calling them does seem like the best way to figure this out. I only have a little engine and don't plan on doing any serious racing.

Yes, definitely call and let them know that you are talking about a 17 or 18 second car. It makes a difference what the performance potential is.
If you can run with just buying belts and helmet, why not get some practice (and BIG FUN) now to get ready for the 2013 season? Helmet certs wont change until 2015 and you got to spend the $ sooner or later.
No pressure, well,.............. unless it would help ;D ;D ;D
