Hi folks!
I am a lifetime VW guy beginning with the green super beetle my Dad had when I was a tot. My first car was a 72 standard beetle which I originally purchased 24 years ago when I was 15. It has been transformed into a bit of a Frankenstein over the years. Frankenstein in a good way depending on how you look at it. After driving it daily through my younger years, I took on a body off pan restoration in 1998 to replace the badly rusted 72 body with that of a 1969 donor car I picked up from a yard in New Mexico. Surprisingly, my 72 pan was in great shape and made it through the restoration with a fresh media blast, paint job, all new bushings, rubber and hard lines. I combined a variety of parts and accessories from various years to suit my tastes, which makes the car nice to drive and look at, but hardly a classic in the pure sense. I've recently built a 1914 powerplant with some help from Primo Petrucci and will have her back on the road in a few weeks. Here is a recent shot.
My daily driver is a MKIV diesel Jetta wagon with 258,000 original miles and I have another MKIV GTI modified track car. I have a huge project in basket case condition ready to go when I am able to make garage a bit taller and longer. That's a 1986 Syncro Vanagon with a pile of parts from various other cars such as a 1996 Passat TDI, various diesel vanagons and a 1984 vanagon westfalia camper including the entire pop top cut at the pillars.
This week, I'll be picking up the next project, a 1960 Jade Green Beetle, completely stock and original. It has some minor rust & small issues to be expected from a 52 year old car. I will be the 4th owner. The second owner purchased it used in 1963, drove it for many years and then garaged it for 25 years. The third owner purchased it from him with intentions of restoring it, but decided he needed to sell it for personal reasons after garaging it again for another year. The car has 128,000 original miles according to the service records. It runs but needs a carb rebuild. It comes with all service records and other time capsule items from it's life. Aside from entirely rebuilding the brakes and replacing the tires, I will be mostly leaving the car as is to drive and enjoy until I have the time and money to do a complete restoration. I'm pretty excited to finally have a classic in unmolested, stock condition.
I'm happy to be here and hope to get to know the Michigan air cooled crowd again. I've been MIA in this scene for many years but gotten to know some great people in the watercooled scene via the MIVE forum, some of whom are making their way back to aircooleds just like me. I live in Ferndale. Hope to meet some good people here.
