This is depressing. Mary Ann is looking at giving up her bug project the OD light is flashing on her mountaineer. Dealer wants over a hundred bucks just to read the tranny codes (autozones scanner won't read them). From everything weve been reading, a new trans is going to he needed soon :(so it looks like she is going to try to sell her bug to get money for a transmission. I'm depressed, I really liked the his and hers bugs idea, and I really thought the plans she had for hers would have made a totally awesome bug.

I would find an independent shop that does transmission work. Around here, the best place is Quality Transmissions (North St, Kalamazoo). I have referred many with tranny problems to them. They perform professional quality work at reasonable prices.
$100 to scan the tranny is more like a scam. Check your BBB for shop ratings and maybe ask friends & relatives where they've had good experiences.
Good luck & hope she keeps the bug.

I agree! $100= robbery. Have you looked into used/scrap yard/craigslist/e-bay? Have you checked into recall for your vehicle, we thought we were going to have to spring for a tranny for one of our ex vehicles turned out to be an unadvertized recall. Also send out a wanted, misc. on this or anyother sites? Isn't this the Bug you had delivered from the North of Nowhere? Hope it all works out. Keep us posted.
