Bear with me this is quite a description. I have a '74 Super with a '72 (?) motor in it. The previous owner put the '74 stock alternator on the '72 motor. Works great. Anyway, I'm confused as to which fuel pump and push rod I should use? I now have a newer tilted fuel pump with the long push rod (previous owner used this combo). The rod eventually bent and the flange cracked. The car went from running great to not at all. So, I tried a new flange with the shorter rod thinking the other was bent from being too long. Now it won't pump anything. When I turn the crank, the short rod goes from flush to about 5/16". The longer rod is closer to Hayne's specs of 1/4" to about 1/2" (these are approx.). Could my fuel pump be bad? Which rod, pump, flange combo should I use? Is the block different from '72 to '74? By the way, I am getting plenty of fuel from the tank. It's just not going anywhere after the pump. Thanks in advanced.

Since you have an alternator you have to use the tilted pump with a short push rod. Should measure to 3 15/16"(100mm) the rod for the generator style is longer and measures 4 1/4"(108mm) Sometimes the aftermarket rods are a little longer than they are supposed to be so you can file them down or use more/less gaskets under the pump. I would use the rod that comes with a pump you buy and it should be fine.

Thanks. I'm thinking I'll probably just buy the complete assembly with a new pump, rod, and flange.
