Anybody know where I can take a welding class in GR? I don't own a welder so want to get taught how and use the schools equipment to practice.
An auto body repair class might be okay too with some basic metal fabrication.
I can't find anyplace that teaches this other than the highschool trade schools and they won't let me attend. I'm too old.
I have no desire to get certified. Just want to be an average hack that can do some of my own basic welding.
GRCC doesn't appear to offer anything.

Kent Career Technical School is the only thing that comes to mind. I had a buddy that looked into it, it was a little expensive and a long class. I don't remember all the details but I can find out. I think its a certified class though. It sounds like Kenn's son is pretty good with a welder, I'm sure he can shed a little more light. My friend Carlos went to GRCC for welding. I hope he is going to come to the November GTG and you can ask him some questions. Here is a link to their site with the available programs for welding. www.grcc.edu/webbuilder/search/DoSearch.cfmAlso if there is a Tech Center that a High School uses in the area you can usually sign up for night classes there for a couple hundred bucks

I just went to Haarbor frieght and picked up a cheap mig that I still use to this day and picked up a welding book from the library then I went to our body shop and picked up some scrap hoods and other misc junk metal then went to town. Im still not pretty but it sticks well and I have made roll bars (got a tube bender also) and other cool stuff. It is SOOOOOOO FUN, your gunna love it!! Go nike and JUST DO IT!!! p.s. some things they never told me in the book. a. the backwards baseball cap under the mask is not to look cool but to keep flaming bits off of your hear and bock of your neck (anyone smell something burning ) b. Keep water in a bucket nearby. Lost some apolstery and some other damage that seems to flame up all the time by flaming flying bits. I dont smoke but you wouldnt know by looking at the seats in my old buggy!! Water is your friend. Dan

Like the others above, I bought a flux core welder from Harbor Freight (it goes on sale often--I think I paif just over $100 for it). Learn to weld on scrap metal.
Local community colleges many times have welding/metal fab classes. Some even have auto body classes that include metal repair. I'd love to learn how to Tig weld, as the mig/flux core doesn't seem well suited to finish sheet metal welding.
