I subscribed to the club's website in May to view Patrick's progress on my wife's 67 Ghia. thegoodvolks.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=projects&action=display&thread=2308I’ve made a few posts since, but completely forgot that I did not make an introduction. I hope I haven’t breached any club etiquette. I’m Brian. I currently own a ’65 Convertible, ’67 Ghia (wife's), and a ’73 Super Beetle. I have never had all three roadworthy at the same time; next year will be the first time. I’ve also owned a ’70 and ’74 Beetle in the past. My father bought a ’64 Beetle new from the dealership. That’s what got me started, though I never got to drive that car. The ‘64 was sold in ’73 for a new AMC Gremlin (before I had my driver license). I’ve met a few of you at shows. This year I made it to the Lansing Buggy Builders thing, the Vintage show in Ypsilanti, the South Haven show, and both Bug Runs. I hope to be able to make it to one of the get-togethers after the new year. From what I’ve read in the forums, this seems to be a great group to be associated with. I hope to be able to make it to one of the get-togethers after the new year. I also look forward to learning more about VWs from the vast knowledge many of you have.

Welcome and the Ghia turned out nice. Will it be running this summer? I'll have it running this spring, but the long path might be re-installing the interior and carpet. Probably won't make the Spring Bug Run, but more likely the June show in South Haven. I've got the engine in the stand and am putting new pistons/cylinders on. I'm still pondering single or dual port, though I'm sticking with the stock 30 Pict carb.

I'm still pondering single or dual port, though I'm sticking with the stock 30 Pict carb. The 30 PICT Carb mounts very nice to the single port intake manifold. You will need an adapter if you want to run the dual port intake manifold.

I have everything I need to go single or dual port, including the carb adapter if I go with dual port. My main consideration is the stock look of the single port. My wife doesn't care either way and the single port provides sufficient power.

This is my thoughts from information gathered but they my differ from other members on here.
The questions is what do you want very simple or more complicated but still simple?
If you run a stock 1600 single port per VW you get 60 hp If you run a stock 1600 dual port per VW you get 63 hp
Now people and myself have claimed that a single port engine delivers more torque at the low rpm range. According to VW both the single port and dual port produce the same amount of torque but VW only gives specs at max RPM. So it never really has been proven
Now for some history
In 1970 VW started with emission regulations when they ran the one year only 1970 engine which is a 1600 single port with a 30 PICT-3 Carb mated to a 205T dizzy. A very nice combination with one flaw the 30 PICT-3 Carb weird 1 year only carb. That has 3 adjustment screws (we can go into detail later if you want) To meet federal regulation VW needed to reduce the rich idle condition caused by the simple carb. To do this they added an Air Bypass Screw on the carb that you use to adjust idle. It allows air to bypass the throttle at idle to help lean out the mixture at idle. It works but can be a pain to adjust.
In 1971 VW started the 1600 dual port using the 34 PICT-3 (an emission carb) This carb was based on the 30 PICT-3 but with a bigger venturi. It too had the 3 adjustment screws that can be a pain to adjust. This carb also had more vacuum ports and to really get this system to run nice and smooth you need to run the stock dual vacuum advance dizzy.
In 1969 (pre VW emissions) VW used a 1500 single port engine with a 30 PICT-2 Carb and a 205T Dizzy. The 30 PICT-2 carb only has 2 adjustment screws (simpler) much easier to adjust. A 30 PICT-2 does have a small issue a port that you can not remove to clean but soaking the carb might remove the clog if one does exist.
So now that I have confused everyone. What do I feel is the best set up? Sorry guys its not listed above......... After tons of research I have found that my easiest most simplest set up is...............
The 1969 to 1968 Bus engine set up
Which is a 1600 cc single port engine mated to a 30 PICT-2 Carb and a 205T Dizzy. I feel that it is the most simplest and most powerful stock VW type 1 engine. You get an easy to adjust carb and a vacuum only dizzy with no counter weights or springs to adjust. Only engine vacuum provides the timing advance.
This is really only my opinion with some history that I have gathered over the years. Just remember that all VW engines are simple some are just simpler than others. I like simple. Early VW engines were very simple just very underpowered.

Early VW engines were very simple just very underpowered. Well said..AJ. Your history lesson reminded me that I had a 30 Pic 3 on my '70 Beetle. I didn't own the car long enough to play with it much. I believe the aftermarket H30/31 is somewhat of a clone to the 30 Pic 2 carb. I have one of those on my '65 convertible w/dual port engine an 009 distributor. I was able to tune the 34 Pic 3 on my '73 pretty well with the stock distributor.

Honestly, I don't remember who I talked to. You'll probably end up talking me into the dual 40 idf's for my '73 SB, but it will be a while. You may remember from another post that I'm running a Weber Progressive on my '73 SB and the Kadrons are next on the list. Why....because I already have some Kadrons on the shelf. ;D I see a 1776 motor with dual carbs in my future........just not sure when.
