MadMike is absolutely right grab OLD manuals at swapmeets, thrift stores, off ebay, Amazon, but it is always nice to another source of information. Public libraries will even inter-library loan shop manuals. Monroe County found the pre`65 manual for me. I learned a lot too bad it runs about $150 My collection includes an ancient Clymer manual, "Saint"(As Bob Hoover's Blog put it) Muirs Guide, along with how to hotrod/dune buggy/ engine rebuild and a Chilton's manual older than me. Of course is has the 7 page color peel away water cooled engine. The editors seem to say the principle of cooling is only a different method. The only thing worse than (especially newer printings)chilton's/haynes lack of information accuracy is works of Keith Sume- restore, interchange. 10 minutes talking to any enthusiast would give you better information and good parts instead wasting the $20 on paper that is not even worthy of recycling. I always keep my eye open for actual used shop manuals since the Bentley reprints seem to have less information somehow. I have also notice there is more body assembly and engine information in the `60s service manual whereas the mullti-port fuel injection and McPherson strut info has been substituted in the `70s manual. If I had a pre`65 manual I might have a slightly more complete picture of Volkswagen. That book was gigantic at least the size of three later service manuals.
