1969 Thing???

Hey you Thing guys:

I was perusing the Internet Movie Car Database...

...when I came upon a VW Thing labeled as a 1969:

Apparently it was seen in a 1971 French movie so, assuming that's correct, it's way before 1973 when the Thing came to the states. (NOTE the small taillights).

Can any of you Thing guys provide a little more history for us?

Type 181's (Things) were manufactured from 69' to 80' only imported to the US. in 73' and 74', there are a very few 75' but they are actually left over 74's that were re-registried as 75s' slightly few then 30,000 were produced for US. sale. There is your History lesson for today.
