A few of us have talked about doing this before, Beetles parked together, busses parked together, Ghias, Type IIIs, etc. My buddy Sam in Maine was at a show - note the sign on the right edge of the photo... gallery.me.com/macomber#100089/Group&bgcolor=blackBTW Sam's green coupe is for sale, but he just discovered a little previously unknown pan rust (DS rear seat area - s/b an easy fix) so he might be willing to deal. Anyway... seems like a good idea to me, and apparently other clubs do this. Makes judging, comparing, viewing easier. Oh yeah, BTW, Sam and I 'met' (over the internet) when I beat him to the punch for my yellow coupe. But I'm starting to think he was the lucky one on that - LOL. Oh yeah, OMT: I just noticed Sam's photo shows all three major styles of the Ghia: 60's 'torpedo' T/S; 70-71 'towel bar' bumpers w/wraparound T/S; and finally Sam's car representing the '72-74 'fat chick' bumpers w/wraparound T/S. See...this is what I was talking about.

Not a big fan of that idea. I plan on having 3 VW's at the next spring Bug Run and I want park them all together. All 3 will not be the same type.

I agree with Steve, we've talked this over and over, doesn't make it any easier to judge, view or enjoy. Besides you'll always have those that don't follow suit. If you want to be together arrive together. Otherwise take it as it comes. My 2 pennies.

I would say nay personally on segregation. The group we usually caravan with is beetles but last time Todd drove his Ghia and we parked together. Again, personally, I like the cars mixed since it is usually 75% beetles anyway. Correct me if I am wrong on the mix of vehicles at say a bug run.

We started parking at the bug runs by category. We got away from it for various reasons. One was we made signs marking off the category areas. That meant work putting them out and then gathering them up and storing them for the next show. When we tried to make categories we always seemed to make someone mad because we did not have the perfect category for them. When we had show categories and parked by category we were trying to use outside, independent judges. We struggled to find good judges. When we had judges they used forms to judge/score the cars. That pattern seemed to make people mad as they felt there was favoritism etc. etc. So, we switched the bug run to the current format. Random parking, top 10 and a peoples choice. Judging by the people who put cars in the show for the top 10 and peoples choice by everyone there. All this to say we have put quite a bit of effort to try to eliminate problems encountered in the past. Our current patterns seem to be working pretty well based on our history. Not to say we can't improve. We have learned something every show and worked to improve after every show. Maybe there is a better way but so far this seems to work well.

I like the way things are now. I feel that the Bug Runs are more to showcase what us "VW people" can accomplish, the wide range of styles, how versatile our cars are, etc. It is also a nice setting to cultivate new friendships as well as meet with old friends. It is informal and low stress. If you are showing just for the trophy, you are there for the wrong reason. If you want your car in a show with that kind of structure, go to Pebble Beach! Really, how many classes would we need to satisfy everyone? For example, A bus class, would it include an all original, mint condition, unrestored Westly competing against a barn find 21 window with loads of patina? There is no judging card in the world that would keep that contest fair! Do we have a seperate class for those of us who built our cars ourselves so we don't have to compete against profesionally built rides? Daily driver? Would the T3 class include T34 or would that be Ghia? What about Dave's Puma, kit car? No! T1? No! Drop him in with the Tub buggies, they're all fiberglass right? WRONG! As you can see, it starts getting complicated VERY quickly, and you WILL have someone upset about their classification. I believe in the K.I.S.S. method, so far it is working for the majority. Kevin, I'd be surprised if it were 75% Beetles, maybe 50%. There were only 3 Beetles in the "Top 10" (9) this year.

I agree with Patrick here. There are just too many types of cars out there, and I personally find it interesting to wander about and see what there is to see.
I kind of like seeing a Bus next to a tub buggy, next to a couple of Beetles...interesting to see how similar, yet how far apart things are.
The Good Volks club does not seem to be about winning hardware, and hopefully neither are our members. Don't get me wrong, winning things are kind of cool, but when it becomes an obsession, it begins to get annoying. I kind of laughed at the Old Fort show. It would stop raining just long enough give folks hope, and out would come the towels and chamois. Then it would rain again. Some of the folks did this three or four times...and several of them were then loaded on a trailer for the trip back home.
To me, those are not automobiles. They are just something to look at...rolling sculpture.
My first Good Volks show, in Holland last year was the best example you could see about folks using their cars. It rained BUCKETS that year...and I for one found myself with an indoor, or at least interior pool. The winner drove to Holland from Chicago in a beautiful, severely slammed Beetle through the rain and back again. He owned a car...not a piece of sculpture. Good for him!

Or we could just put the Ghias out in left field? Just kidding! At the old way shows, there where more Beetles than anything else, now the club has grown we see an interesting mix of most all V-dubs types. The mix adds to the show not takes away.
