I'm starting to give some thought to looking for a Type III - either a Fasty or Squareback; don't really care, but I'd like a sunroof model.
Now for the year??? I don't know these as well as I do Ghias, but I do know I want:
early bumpers (not "Fat Chick" bumpers like on my Ghias) factory dual carb (not FI) 12v of course.
What years are we talking about here?

1967 and earlier are 6 volt cars & Carb(s), 1968 up are 12 volt and FI. 1968 & 1969 are still the small bumpers. 1968 and up have IRS rear suspension. Why not FI ? theSamba Type 3 Forum is a great place to visit.

67 was still 6v?? 67 was 1st year of 12v in Type I. I'm sure I would remember this if true - I worked at a dealer back then. Are you sure you're not mistaken?
I dunno, I just heard bad things about FI - not true?
Did the 68's have integated headrests in the front seats like the Ghia?
Thanx for the info.
Love your thumbnail BTW.

First year exported to U.S. was the 1965 Squareback then the Fastback in '66, '67 was still 6V. 1968 was the year of change. '68 and up in the U.S. had the highback bucket seats unless it was a Canadian or other export model. FI is no more difficult than carbs but NOS FI parts are getting hard to find and vary in application for specific years. Parts for Type 3's are available but has to be searched out, were as early model stuff is getting expensive. 1968 & 1969 T3's are the best of both worlds with the early look and late model features. 1970 - '73 T3 models are more widely available, as are parts. The Carb / FI debate can be found on theSamba.com

There is something very cool about the notchback. Wish I could own another car, I just don't have the room for it.

You learn something new everyday, but some of the early productions were still 6V and a changing model year. I prefer 1973 T3's because of lowest U.S. production, factory color availability and most refined version. Of course, the early model are always the nicest looking but driveability and availability of parts are what matters to me. typ3nut on theSamba !

Of course, a LOT of 6v cars have by now been converted to 12v so this may be a non-issue...
