Hi Everyone,
Looking at our options for a what is the best modern day method for changing a spare? Post a link of what you use if possible so we can get some ideas.
Like the idea of a small/slim/portable floor jack in a plastic case, but then where do you store it?

Problems not just the venue of Beetles, Kevin. I deformed the jack port area of my yellow Ghia the other day.
I'm thinking of a small scissors jack stored under the back seat....

Understood Art, changed the thread title. We saw in the MA Motorworks catalog there is a foot that fits into the floor jack foot and mounts into the jack point. Looked pretty slick for $14.99. www.mamotorworks.com/acvw?frame=1.4774

You never want to jack the car up from the factory jack points this is how many Beetles ended up with dented heater channels/rear quarter panels. I jack mine up under the front beam and on the spring plates on the rear.

Also can drive the car onto some boards to get the car up a little higher to get a standard jack under there. I have seen some smaller jacks in hardshell plastic cases that should travel well in a car.

Well what I do is not on the list.
Before my air-cooled days I was into water-cooled VW's mostly early Rabbits and 80's Golfs. I found the early Rabbits had the coolest small scissors jack. I now carry it in my Ghia under the rear seat. For a cheep small scissors jack find your local junk yard.
A scissors jack is perfect for road side repairs and to carry in your car because usually they are light and do not take up tons of space. For your home shop a good hydraulic jack is perfect. On the Ghia I actually use my scissors jack to lift the car high enough to slide my hydraulic jack underneath.
For jacking points I use the center of the front beam for both front wheels and the rear torsion bar for the rears wheels.
X4 on the use of factory jack points.

Look what we learn by asking. I was looking into racing style low floor jack but weight and size of jack keep coming into play. Might have to look into the scissors jack instead. thanks all for the replies thus far.

Kevin, Thanks for bringing up this subject. I do not carry a jack except an original one. I'll look for a small scissors jack for Ghia and something for a bus.

I agree with everyone else on the jack points(factory). I carry a small Craftsman floor jack(stored in the front apron) in Ruffuss as well as the stock Thing jack. But Ruffuss sits high enough I can get my big floor jack with a length of 2x6 under it without a problem. Doesn't Art have a small craftman jack for sale cheap?
