I use a thermostat on my 1970 Bus and I love it. My Bus engine warms up very quickly and my oil temp never goes over 210 degrees. My Bus has a 1600 cc beetle style engine so its definitely different than yours.
With a thermostat your engine will last longer because it will reach optimum running temperature quicker. During the cooler months you will have heat earlier.
I once had a Type 4 Thermostat and I did not quite know what it was it was different than a regulator Beetle thermostat. I ended up selling it for $10 bad mistake. No one reproduces a type 4 thermostat and good working used ones are rare. Mine worked dummy me.
Occasionally on thesamba you may find a used type 4 thermostat for sale. I also believe that some Bus places even make a kit to utilize a type one thermostat. Just keep your eyes open.
Sorry on the timing issue I am no help.

The Samba site has many helpfull threads regarding the timing on the bus. I got a lot help from the site and timed my 77 bus with FI 2.0 engine this spring.

Ithink its the same as a type 1 except a cable attaches to it instead of a rod like type 1. I have used a T4 in a T1, have to mod. the ends as I recall ,think there are only 2 diff. temp ranges on all thermos that shouldnt matter to much. rwk
