From what I've heard from folks around here, the SP heads give a little bit more low end torque, but who knows. It doesn't matter much anyways because: The longblock is done with dual port heads

It was ready to go in by my 23rd birthday, yesterday, but I didn't have the front firewall tin so a few of us are searching our stashes down here for one.

I have 1 or 2 of the bus front tin but none have the hole for the doghouse in it. In the past I have just cut the opening from a regular bus front tin.
I will tell you a secret........ but shhhhhhhh ok
The bus tin is the same shape as a beetle but with the added extension. So if someone had a 71 or later beetle front tin and a 68-70 bus front tin with no hole. You could just drill out the spot welds on the extension on the early bus tin and weld it to the late beetle tin. Instant 1 year only 1971 front bus tin.

AJ,
The way we wound up doing it was keeping the engine with a single port oil cooler, but with dual port heads on it, so pretty much it's set up like a 68-70 bus engine. Bill down here who runs Der Wagenwerks in Elyria showed me the difference between a beetle and bus tin piece and it is a difference. The one he has is dual port with the extension welded in place.

Oh ok I saw dual port and assumed dog house. My engine is the exact opposite as yours I have single port but the doghouse oil cooler.
If you can not find the front tin without the hole I know that I have at least one here that I can give to you.

To help clarify here are the details.... If anyone feels that this is a hijack let me know and I will clean it up. Here is a picture of a 1971+ Beetle or other front tin next to a 1968-1970 Bus front tin. The 1968-1970 Bus one is taller Here is the break down ? to 1970 front Beetle tin looks like the shorter one in the picture but without the small rectangular hole or pre-doghouse oil cooler. 1971 to ? front Beetle tin is in the picture above (the shorter one) note the hole for the air outlet for the doghouse oil cooler. 1968 to 1970 front Bus tin is in the picture above (the taller one) note no rectangular hole 1971 only front Bus tin looks like the taller one in the picture but with the hole for the air outlet for the doghouse oil cooler. If you are running a doghouse cooler on a 1968-1971 bus you must use this tin. The problem is that it is very sought after due to the 1 year production run. Like stated above you can make a 71 Bus front tin if you have a 71+ Beetle tin and a 68-70 bus front tin. By drilling out the spot weld on the Bus one and welding the addition to the Beetle one.

A big thanks to AJ for the right piece of tin. It came in the mail, got a quick shot of black paint and the engine was installed. Just a note to everybody who might not know this, there are 2 different heights of single port oil cooler seals, one being a smidgen taller than the other. I had both heights in my random gasket box. The short ones must be for early stuff, as I had a leak after installing them. So the engine had to be pulled and the taller ones swapped in. I have no oil leaks after a few hours of break in time in the parking lot today so that makes 3 VWs of mine that don't leak any oil to mark their spots, and a spare engine that doesn't either Glen's return from taking it for a maiden voyage. Now I have to sort out the vacuum and booster stuff and put my rebuilt 34 pict on it. Then I'll rebush my 30 pict that's on it, either with brass or maybe with some real bushings after they arrive in the mail

I am glad you received the front tin and it looks like it works.
As for the oil cooler seals you also need to worry about the size of the holes. 1970 engines are the worst. I always have to check the hole size between the cooler and the block.

I was able to salvage the wooden piece from a 72 that goes here and added a new curtain piece. We slipped in the old brown door panels for the time being, may keep them, make some, or use the bright green ones that are buried in the barn. New floor installed by dad and I using a samba thread courtesy of Sean. Another floor photo with side panel too. Trying to determine what radio to use. It's currently wired for the Kenwood, but not sure if it works. My uncle gave me a CB to install as a joke though I may decide to use it.

Off the wall question: does anybody know of a modern paint that is a close match to that of the legs on a westy stool?
The stock color is some denomination of gray/cream/white from what my eyes detect.
