I can't see any way to do it with piano hinges unless you use one at the very center of the cover and cut away the inner lip. You can cut custom hinges out of 12 gauge and bend them the way you want. That's the only way I can see you doing it, and you will still have pretty good size fasteners showing on the outside.
The external hinges I showed you would work for you, although you might have to trim a relief notch in the lower flange to allow the hinge studs to fix.
You can also check British car parts magazine. They use a LOT of external hinges on their cars.
