Hey guys, my first time posting here but have read many of the posts, and I am enjoying all of the pics and good stories of everyones finds and projects. I am pretty new to the Grand Rapids area and have a 73 westy that I am wanting to get starting on the rebuild, but I am in need of some people to resource since I cannot do all of the work myself lacking the proper equipment for the entire job. So I was wondering if anyone might be able to refer some people to me in the North Grand Rapids/Rockford area that does body work. Also looking to replace the type 1 that it has, with the original style so if anyone has any leads there I would greatly appreciate. Don't have any pics to put up yet, but will post some soon. Thanks!

oops, sry, intro is in now:) So Wheatland Music Festival in Remus is only a week away, and after that i have plans to start tearing into the bus for the winter. I am short on the tools for an entire resto at this time so if anyone has any good body repair guys in the Rockford/Grand Rapids area that would b sweet, and if anyone has a good lead on a type 2 motor, that would also b appreciated. Actually, I am open to all suggestions at this point as this will be my first VW resto,, and i am pumped about getting it started. Thanks guys!

so over the Labor Day weekend I traveled back to my hometown in Ohio, and got together with some of my good friends back at their shop to take a look at some of their new projects, hope to get those pics up soon:). But anyways they were nice enough to hook me up with an entire engine for Philmore. Not to knowledgeable about this, but they hooked me up with a 1795 out of a 73 412 wagon, but forgot to ask about the transmission. I believe the transmission to be the original, but will the motor out of the 412 bolt up to this trans.?I know without seeing the bus it hard to answer this but any info will help. Thx!

oh yeah,,im terrible with details, but I believe the transmission that is currently in the bus is the stock 3rib manual for the 1973 westy. Being the newby that I am, I will provide more details as i learn:D

An engine from a 1973 412 will bolt to a STOCK 1973 Bus transmission. If you had a type one engine installed someone either shaved of 1/4" from your trans input shaft or replaced the input shaft with a older one. I do not know if a type 4 engine clutch and pilot bearing will work with a shortened trans input shaft.
Some of the tin may need to change from the type 4 to the bus.
Does your existing type 1 engine have all of the necessary tin to seal from the hot exhaust gases?

hmm,,,seeing some of the work the old owner has had done in the past, I am going to guess the easier of the two, lol, but I guess I wont know till i pull the engine hopefully in a few weeks. And the previous owner was driving around without the proper tins, and no I have not been able to find proper tins for it yet, but I do have the proper tin with the 412 motor. So unfortunately I have not been driving the bus to much:( I am still trying to find someone to take a good look at the bus, since I am not VW smart(not yet), to let me know if the bus is restoreable, before I start putting the work into it.

I could stop by to see what you have, but I have to warn you....I lean towards the idea of trying to restore everything.

Hey guys, just wanted to thank Dave for taking time out of his busy schedule to stop out and taking a look at what I have going on with the Westy, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately I think we were both left kind of scratching our chins at what would be the right move for this bus, after all it still has some good points about it. So before I make the decision of taking the goods off and parting out the body, I want to see if I can find a sheet metal worker that would be interested in doing some work. I think if I can find a good metal worker I am going to give it a shot and try to bring my baby back to life. So if anyone knows of a good metal worker in the G.R. area, give me a yell!I would really like to try and have the new metal done, and the 1800 built by next spring, if possible, Thx guys!
