Hello,
My name is Scott Hansen. I have lived here in Holland, MI for the last 27 years. I was at the little D&W car show last Sunday with my buggy (It’s maiden voyage!) and I ran into this really nice guy who mentioned there was a VW club here in the Holland area. (I can’t remember his name; I am getting old I guess.) This is great; I really like the clubs low key style.
Although this is my first Manx style buggy, I am not new to VW’s. My first car was a 68 Bug. My dad owned a body shop in the Muskegon area, so to say the least, it got customized a bit. I learned a lot from that car, and I had a great time with it.
I was VW free for many years when my wife ran across this buggy on Craigslist last May. A week later it was in the garage and the fun began.
I found out it’s a Kellison Sandpiper XP-1. The chassis is a 1964 type 1 shortened 14.5”. The engine is a 1974. I think it is pretty much stock with the exception of the dress up parts. I am not sure what year the trans is, but maybe I will find out someday.
I have a small site I put up that chronicles the build a bit. It’s not completely thorough, but you get the idea. It’s: inventionworks.googlepages.com
Scroll down to the bottom and click on the “Manx Style Buggy” word to jump to the page. The images in there are all clickable to enlarge them.
Well, I guess this is like an addiction of sorts; All it took was one buggy project and I am “Jones’n” for the air cooled stuff again. I would love to do another bug, or a bus. Either one would be great.
Anyway, I am looking forward to meeting you. I see on the home page that you do the Saturday get-to-gather at the DQ. Is that still going on? What would be a good time to roll in?
See you soon,
Scott
